I just finished my first build. I pulled the charging handle back and bolt doesn't go back forward. What have I done wrong?

Do you have any pics?

are you pulling it back with an empty mag inserted?  THe bolt catch will hold the bolt back if there is an empty mag inserted, or you toggle the bolt catch release button manually.

Buffer spring installed? We need more details.

If you don't have a mag in, make sure you installed the bolt catch spring.

Whats holding the bolt up? Not the bolt catch?

Did you disassemble the bolt carrier group and maybe put something in wrong?

I did slide the bolt out of the carrier. I doubt I would have slid it back in wrong. Not saying it's not possible. Without the bolt forward, I can't disassemble to inspect.

What happens when you depress the bolt catch when the bolt is not going home does the bolt release?

Maybe you have an out of spec bolt catch.

I lied, I never removed the bolt, only bcg from the upper. I've got it apart now for inspection. The rifle not the bcg.

No, pressing the bolt catch doesn't send bolt in.

Looking thru the e port, I can see the bolt is sticking back and isn't even sliding back up against the catch.

Fixed it, and wow how embarassing. I was letting my 4 year old son "help" Daddy put it together and he had made off with the buffer spring while I wasn't looking. I had no more parts in the box and was done, in my mind at least. Sorry for causing you guys the confusion.
