Well my dad bought an ar with a lightweight barrel a while back because I told him it would be fine and I figured it would at least shoot 1 in groups at 100yrds like my 16" carbine does. Well it turns out it shoots like crap and I feel bad about telling him to buy it so... I want to find something that will drop in and replace his that has a heavy contour and hopefully more accurate than what he has. Think of sticking with the carbine length so I won't have to mess around with buffers and stuff to get it to run good and hopefully his handguards and stuff will drop back in place to save me some money.
So what do you guys suggest in a heavier 16 in carbine that can use the standard handguards and comes with a low pro gas block that will shoot 1 in at 100yrds. Under $250 Or am I asking for to much I might take my16" barrel off and swap it to his. |

Todd: fyi, lightweight does not always equate to mediocre accuracy. For example, my govt profile 20" barrel from Green Mountain, and my son's "scout" weight 16" ARP barrel (see link below) - both can regularly put 10 rounds into less than an inch at 100 yds. The primary factor is the quality of the barrel, next is stiffness. Tell your Dad to replace his questionable barrel with a different lightweight from a quality maker. - CW

| Who is the barrel manufacturer? Were you shooting from a brenchrest? did you try different ammo? what size groups were you getting? Is the barrel free-floated? The reason I ask is that there are a lot of variables that can cause inaccurate groups and usually it's not going to be barrel profile that causes accuracy issues. |
| Well, has more than one person shot it? Could be operator error. To reiterate what other have said: What make, model, twist rate, and ammo was used... The profile will have little to do with accuracy. The operator, ammo used, if their is crown damage, etc, is going to be the deciding factor regarding accuracy. I agree with your barrel length choice, a 16 inch barrel is perfect for shooting out to 300+ yards without the extra weight and length of a longer barrel... |

Rainier Arms Select barrels guarantee sub MOA and are $225. I'd start by looking here. Great value and quality for the money. on my varmint rifle and I get .5 moa with 3 5shot groupings at the END of my shooting session....not cold I use handloads and not factory ammo |
| Its a Delton sport rifle 1/9 twist non freefloat 16in. It shoots 2in groups at best with any ammo. Tried 50gr, 55, and 62 most hunting loads(vmax) and some bulk 55g. Working on getting stuff to reload some to try but it's hard to find anything for 223 right now. He is using a lead sled and the scope came off another hunting rifle so it should be good. He's checked a couple times to make sure mounts and everthing is staying tight. Only thing I haven't checked is the barrel nut. |

I can at least tell you what barrel NOT to buy...
Recently I purchased the below 'lightweight' barrel and front sight assembly from Rock River Arms. I installed it on my AR and went to the range last Saturday, 21 Sept 2013. My rifle with this combo would not cycle. And I'm not talking about short-stroking, or FTE. I mean not cycle at all. Now, I start going through all the checks. Ammo is good (tried 5 brands, hand cycling all), headspace is good, gas tube isn't kinked, etc. So the last thing to check is the barrel and front sight assembly. Long story short,... I simply cannot for the life of me guess how the hell this barrel/front sight combo ever made it past RRA quality-control, or should I say, lack thereof. In the pictures below, I have not altered the parts in any way and I have not altered the photos in any way. The picture of the barrel is from the top looking down. Can you guess by the photos why my AR would not cycle? http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c112/bladerunner70/IMG_4230_zps733ea50e.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c112/bladerunner70/IMG_4236_zpsb22beafc.jpg http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c112/bladerunner70/IMG_4235_zps19e53330.jpg While I'm sure there are thousands of satisfied customers who are happy with their RRA products, I can say that I am definately not one of them. |

LOL, what did RRA say?
They said they would 'fix' the issue. I said, no way, if your company can't do any better than this, I don't trust anything you make. I'm sending everything back. They said they wouldn't refund my original shipping or pay for the return shipping and I responded by saying, fine,...I'll just deny the charge to my CC because your product is sh*t and I have all the proof I need to justify the denial. They agreed to pay for the return shipping and all my original charges.
