Hello everybody. This is my first post, so I'll start with my intro. My name is Mitch, I'm an Air Force vet ('87-'91/93rd Bombardment Wing/B-52 CrewChief), married w/2 daughters (still at home). I have been working in the security industry for 22 years now, I just haven't decided if I want to make it my career

I know the question has been asked on her ad nauseum, but not sure if it has been asked for this reason.

I am wondering, if I would only buy one AR-15 (complete) for around $800 to $1000, what would be the best way to go? I would add optics, and accessories on my own. Looking for durability, ease of maintenance, maintenance parts availabity, and it will be used for regular shooting indoors and out, and home defense if the SHTF.

I asked the question this way, is because it would most likely be my only AR-15. I enjoy firearms quite a bit, but I'm not the type that would have multiples of the same caliber. More like just 1 of each. I also want an AK-47, but wit the immense production of these rifles, I'm not worried about availability any time soon.

I shoot with my daughters regularly (twice a month) at my dads farm, and there is an indoor range by my office, for in the winter.

Thanks everyone!

Get a colt 6920, 16" carbine length gas system. If you don't get a colt, get a 16" carbine length gas system and standard carbine buffer, something that functions flawlessly with all ammo types, don't get all exotic if it's your only AR, you can always add rails and optics and stocks and all that good stuff if you want, but basically you are going to want it to be reliable with all ammo. Get a 1 in 9 or a 1 in 7 twist barrell, in that order. Good luck, lots of good ones out there, Colt, S&W, Windham (hope I spelled that right) etc. etc. .....

Not even Colt fanboys tout 16" carbine gas.

If going with a 16", mid gas is the way to go.

PSA always has great deals running, if I'm not mistaken they have two carbines for $1099 sporting either an aimpoint pro or an eotech 512, whichever you fancy, and they're on par with spikes and colts. why spend a grand on just the rifle when you can get same quality rifle + quality optic for the same price. Spikes, BCM, and Colts are all good too.
