Ive got a barrel left over from another build that Id like to turn into a dissipator build but I cant find anywhere that tells me what the diameter of the barrel is where the FSB would go.
The 16" socom barrel Also is there a fixed front sight base that is clamp on? All the ones Ive found are the normal pinned type. Which brings me to my next question, if I go the pinning route who should I send my upper to, to get the FSB pinned? I may go the pinned route anyway since it looks better. Ill be using the magpul handguards if that makes any difference. Thanks |
| Good deal, Ill give them a call tomorrow. Starting out with the right barrel definitely would've been the easiest route but the barrel was "free" since it was off another build and I doubt I could get more than 100 or so for it. Plus its a known good shooter, for whatever reason itll shoot 1" groups at 100 with cheapo pmc bronze 55gr and a pst 1-4 scope. Ive never had the cheap stuff shoot that well so I dang sure don't want to get rid of it. Hopefully they don't charge me an arm and a leg to pin a FSB on it and add a delta ring. |

Am I going crazy or is it really hard to find a fixed front sight block? Found plenty of flip up and picatinny sight blocks but not the normal fixed front sight block. Here you go... Garage sale! |

You will not be able to pin a FSB on that rifle unless you have one made up with a bore .0005" larger than your barrel.
You can't put a standard 3/4" bore FSB on a .730" barrel. I've used a bunch of these. clamp on FSB I built 2 dissapators with a strip of stainless steel shim stock wrapped around the barrel under the FSB. The phosphate finish (parkerized) on the FSB and the barrels I used really gripped the soft stainless shim, and it would take a mighty big hit to move the FSB. The Melonite finish on your SOCOM barrel may be a bit more slippery... not sure how well it will grip the stainless. If you want a strip of stainless shim I can snail mail you one since the only way I could find to buy it was in a sheet. Installed carefully, you cannot even see the shim stock. Joe *edit* I have one of those SOCOM barrels. Today I zeroed a new optic on that rifle (USO SR-8S) with plinking reloads then shot 2 five shot groups both under .9" at 100 yards off a front and rear bag with 75 gr Hornady HPBTs and 22.2 gr IMR 4895. Good barrels. |
