I noticed when I first bought my rifle the standard M4 handguard was off maybe1/16"  compared to gas block.  I figured I could live.with it.  I just bought an Eotech 5512,now if I ever decided to with a magnifier I would have to make room. I would have the buis the magnifier and the eo.

I tried moving the eo forward to make room, as  I move it forward the canted barrel nut/ rail it moves the sight up and off center slightly but enough to drive me nuts.  Do I send it back to have the barrel nut retourqed? Kinda at a loss.

Can you post some pics? Also, what type of forearm is currently installed? Have you removed it to check the alignment of the nut?

Maybe hard to see in pics. Does the same thing with other hand guards. The barrel nut looks to be lined up with gas tube just fine. Something  is out of whack though.

What hand guards are you using?

MidWest Industries Carbine length. Have also tried a Samson and was also off the same way.

Those are just drop in handgaurds.

They don't always line up excatly.

Your barrel nut is just a hair off, It would have to bee moved to fix it but it is not worth it.

You are not trying to mount a front sight to the Handguard right, so it should not matter.

There should be able to mount Your magnifier and Eo-tech with the correct mounts and still have room with the BUIS making the rail irrelevent.

Like This.

I have also put the hand guard on another rifle and it works fine.

This. Ran into this with my MI g2 ss. Measured how far the nut needed to be tweaked and loosened and retightened it to where the rail would line up

Thought the g2ss may mount to the barrel nut differently than your rail.

My 512s mount is a bit longer. Maybe I will have enough room and it be a non issue.

Ok so you're trying to mount an optic on a non free floated handguard?

Yeah I can see the bartel nut issue, but I'd never mount an optic on such a rail.  Out is possible to mount an speech, magnifier and buis on the receiver.

Barrel nut is just a bit crooked, remove the gas tube, loosen and reinstall the barrel nut, check the gas tube alignment, then install the hand guard.

Everything should line up just fine then.

This is how much room I am left with.  Get rid of the back up to put on a magnifier?

You could get an EOTech riser set up for lower 1/3 cowitness that would also allow you to move it further forward on the upper.

No, don't dump the back up.

Take it to a gunshop that works on AR's, have them correctly index the barrel nut.
Then you can bridge the gap without worrying about the cant of the hand guard.

Looks like you could use the shorty EOTech.

This is starting to become and even more $$$ endeavor that I had anticipated. There has to be a cheaper route.  And now you guys have me thinking I need to raise it up to 1/3rd either way now.

The cheaper route is to use the EO without a magnifier.

You should be able to make hits out to 300 yards on steel easily with no magnifier.

Practice.

I like that idea better, and that was my intentions. I am over thinking it I believe.
