I have an A1-upper / A2 barrel 16" carbine that I built on a decent PWA lower about 20 years ago - FN parts courtesy of Model 1 Sales or somewhere equivalent.  The upper is rough - obvious tooling marks in various places, and lots of them, but well coated with anodizing.  I don't think uppers are made rough any more - most of the current manufacture ARs I've seen are well polished.  My rifle is quite accurate for a shorty, has a good upper/lower fit, and operates perfectly - and I recently stuck on a Chicom quad rail and front handle just for the hell of it, but I've been thinking of changing out the upper, strictly for cosmetic finish.  Would that be stupid?  What do you think?

You said it yourself.  Purely cosmetic.  Up to you.

Sell the upper half and get the one you want. For example, a 14.5" SOCOM 1:7 carbine barrel with a slightly extended flash hider welded on to make 16", with rail of your choice, in an M4 (flat top) receiver along with a full-auto M16 BCG. You could have a back-up sight and optic on the receiver rail. Wow - that is a primitive AR you have there, but somebody will want the upper.

if you ever wanted to sell that PWA lower, i'd be willing to buy you a matched upper and lower set in return.

stuck with pre ban lowers down here if we want full featured rifles

Primitive?  Vintage maybe.  No, it's a Classic!

Thanks for the inputs - I'll likely just keep it as is.  If I were to build another, I think I'd go .308.

Handle-mounted scope is designed to be used in conjunction with a Delta cheek riser or some other means to raise the eye to the line of sight and remain in contact with the stock. So unless your head is shaped like Jar-Jar Binks, I'd like to see how you use it and maintain a cheek weld.
