I have been lurking on this forum for years but have never had a reason to post…until now.  I have always wanted to acquire an AR-15 since as far back as I can remember. A few months ago I only had basic knowledge of the platform. I set out to learn everything I could about functionality of the system and what constituted a quality product before I made a purchase. I invested a lot of time talking with different employees at gun stores and conducting research on the web. I have found that if I have a question regarding the AR-15 platform, somebody else has already asked it online!

I recently made my final selection: the Daniel Defense DDM4V5 Lightweight model.  It weighs in at 6 pounds 5 oz. and feels good in my hands.  This one was built March 2013 so it includes the updated quad rail which is much slimmer and to my liking.   I recently added the Magpul CTR stock along with the MOE grip.  I chose Troy folding battle sights for starters (electronic optic to be added later).  I have a BCM mod 4 charging handle on the way and have just received a VCAS sling for it.  I have not gone to the range yet.  I am looking forward to getting it zeroed and seeing how it shoots.

If there are any accessories beyond what I have already named that you would recommend, please let me know.  I am very interested in learning more about the variety of different options that are available for my carbine.  Particularly in regards to optics such as Aimpoint, Eotech, etc.  I was also curious as to what range I should zero my carbine for HD purposes?  Here are a few pictures:

Great choices on everything imo.

I have and prefer the Aimpoint Micro

You have everything you need, just mags and ammo

I zero at 75yards, but most choose 50yds or 100yds.
Take a look at Molons Zero/ trajectory charts and decide which you prefer.

For home defense a light would be my first on that baby.

Any recommendations on flashlights, mounts?

You have made a great choice! That is a good looking rifle. Lots of choices for optics out there. Do the same level of research as you did for your rifle and you'll be happy. I think the Aimpoint PRO is something to consider as well as a Magpul AFG.
Here is an interesting light. I run Surefire lights but this one is interesting.

It's... Beautiful. Very nice.
Tac light for HD and most (myself included) recommend a 50yd zero for general purpose. At HD ranges, your zero won't really matter, as you're pretty much guaranteed to be hitting ~2" low no matter how you zero it.

I think you made a great choice on the rifle. As far as zeroing. I understand what others are saying about 50 and 100 yards. Though in my case, 25 yards is the only readily available range I have access to right now. So I zeroed mine about 2" high at 25 yards, which I believe should carry me out to at least 100 yards, hitting a man size target without issue

First, nice rifle.  It really pays off to do your research before you purchase your 1st AR.  Personally, I would put either an Aimpoint micro or PRO on there if you are set on a non-magnified optic.  The micro is only like 3oz + the weight of the mount so it will keep the weight down but if you are on a tight budget, the PRO is a great optic as well.

I would zero at 50m.... gives a pretty flat trajectory out to 250.  The 100m is good too but i prefer the 50.
