pulled an M4 out of the arms room to training today and it was sloppy i thought it was just the upper to lower fit. had some down time for a smoke break and i was looking at it and if i held to upper tight i could move the barrel side to side about 1 or 2cm
the upper and lower were two diffrent shades of finish and the upper looked really worn and old almost silver so what was wrong with it? barrel nut not tight enough?

If the barrel can be rotated that much, then it is most likely a sheared index pin.

ETA: If the play is up/down and side to side, then it would probably be attributed to a loose barrel nut. In a worse case scenario, the threads on the barrel socket may be stripped or may have become slightly extruded. or possibly even cracked.

if it just moves freely it's more than a sheared index pin.

cue the pic of the barrel completely off the upper with upper receiver threads stripped.

I let the armorer know about it when I turned it back in. You would think for a country who's motto is "ready to fight tonight" (S Korea) would have better equipment hopefully nothing kicks off, I have no faith in the weapons or vehicles that are here

I had a old .45 auto that I carried for a while in Vietnam that couldn't hit a big 20mm ammo can at 10 ft..  The barrel bushing was completely worn to hell.  Nobody seemed to care.

Concern for small arms is fleeting at best from the big green machine (and other branches as well).
