| What are some mods that someone can do to there AR15 that's free. basically Ive been layed off for a bit now and I feel like a bum not tinkering with my AR in some way. Since Im on a tight budget till my job comes back around Im looking for things I can do to my AR for free....I have all AR tools and some spare parts. FYI Im a fan of a MilSpec trigger so I wont be touching the FCG. |
I don't know about free...an AR isn't a turbo DSM.
Krylon is cheap, you could try giving it some camouflage. And if you don't like it, acetone and cheap toothbrushes are also cheap. Paracord is also cheap. Buy a hundred feet in the color you like and try making a paracord sling. |

Takedown Pin Modification - only $0.35 for the 4-40 set screw as long as you already have the tap, otherwise $5.35 for tap and set screw. Similar mod for selector switch using 8-32 set screw 1/4-20 Set Screw for Grip Screw/Trigger modification to eliminate or reduce trigger creep. |

The best mod is free, but almost no one does it. Dry fire Dry fire Dry fire Mod yourself, be a better shooter through dry firing your weapon. Not only does it help your shooting technique, but it will also naturally smooth out your trigger without having to do potentially dangerous trigger "jobs." It amazes me what a cottage market cleaned up standard FCGs has become - fire a couple thousand rounds with generous dry-fire practice, and it will naturally improve. I don't know if people are simply impatient, or just don't shoot/practice enough to get to that point, but it's a free "mod" that will both improve your technique, and your trigger. ~Augee |

I'm tired of hearing *click *click *click for tonight!?" Do we have the same wife or are they all the same? But she can use that damn nail file and gets mad when I ask her to stop LoL!

I heard people modifying there bolts and polishing them up so they clean easier. Is it worth it? Same issues at the supposed "free" trigger jobs. Polishing metal parts on your AR that have been hardened, or phosphated, is not a good idea. It is very difficult to do this without damaging your parts permanently. You can "polish" your BCG and trigger by doing what the board suggests. Cycling your rifle. I have seen 30 year-old M16A1's that cycle so smooth you'd think the BCGs were chromed or NiB'ed, but it's just the sheer number of rounds cycling through the weapon. You can help you rifle along without spending the $$ to actually shoot the ammo, by hand cycling it (i.e. dry firing it). Put The Rock on your TV and have at it. |

The was a good thread on here a while back along the same lines. I think it was aimed at mods that are $5 or less. Some of the better ones I remember are:
Bicycle tube as a grip wrap The little red wedge to tighten up a sloppy lower/upper fit O-ring on the front take down lug to tighten up a sloppy lower/upper fit ATV on the charging handle to reduce gas in your face. Color fill you lower (If you are in to that sort of thing) Threading the rear take down detent spring channel. Then use a set screw to retain the spring so that the back plate can be more easily removed. Using a soldering iron to stipple your grips etc.. |
