I'm running a RRA single stage trigger that has always been kind of gritty and heavy like most mil-spec triggers are. Yesterday evening I was running a few drills where I was putting four rapid shots in each target before moving to the next when all of a sudden my trigger pull changed. It's now grit free and feels like it's a couple of pounds lighter. I fired another 60 rounds and the trigger stayed the same, smooth and noticeable lighter. This morning I did some dry firing to see if anything had changed and it hadn't. I've check the fcg and everything is still squared away. Is this normally the way a trigger breaks in? The rifle has close to 4k rounds through it.
Sounds fishy. You pulled the trigger group and checked it out? Sounds like a hammer spring or trigger sub-assembly spring broke. But if everything checks out, I'd say you're good. I'm sure a trigger will change slightly over time, but it shouldn't be abrupt like that.

If nothing looks out of place it might have just been a piece of debris of some sort in the lower. The debris caused the trigger pull to feel gritty while it was in place and then the recoil dislodged it and the trigger felt smoother. If no problem then usually simplest answer is the right one. |
I bought a new lower with a DPMS parts kit in it. Worst trigger ever, and it did not improve. It has been my experience that only moderate improvement comes with use, and it takes a lot of use. What happened on yours is a mystery, but it did not just 'break in'.
After 4K rounds it should have been noticeably smoother. At any case, if it's GTG now, then count it as a blessing. If you feel like it, disassemble the FCG, degrease everything, relube lightly and reassemble. Check carefully for anything amiss, and if nothing significant is found... My Ruger trigger took lots of work, but I'm happy with it now. Are your patterns improving with a better trigger?
