I got a YHM stripped upper and basic dust cover kit and I'm having issues with the port door latching in place when closing. I think I installed everything correctly but I'm not 100% sure. From what I can tell the dust cover isn't closing far enough for the ball (for lack of a better term) to lock into the groove on the reciever. I attatched a couple of pictures in hopes that someone can tell me if I installed it wrong, or if it's a problem with the dust cover/receiver.

Theres no BCG in this upper

This next picture is with me holding the dust cover closed as far as it will go

Looks like an improper bolt carrier.

ETA:  the cut out section in the bolt carrier that allows the door to close is way too small, also where are the vents?

Seriously???...lol j/k

Its installed correctly... Does the ball even contact the upper?... Does the door look bent a tad or bowed out a bit or anything?

Yes the ball contacts the upper, the cover doesn't appear to be bent or damaged . No matter how far I push the dust cover closed the ball won't lock into the groove inside the receiver.

ETA: Im thinking the best way to find out the problem is get the dust cover swapped out and if it does the same thing then it's a problem w/ the receiver?

Look at your BCG, there's a scallop or grove cut into the carrier, your door doesn't line up with that groove..

Serious, are you two that (politically correct way of saying dumb) uninformed or are you just joking?
And to top it all one is a mod. Worthless post you two.

OP The upper or the dust cover could be out of spec a little.
Try another dust cover is the easiest next step, it looks installed correctly.

take a punch or something and activate that ball a few times. I think its just being stubborn. It is spring loaded. Try that.

THIS...    My first one was very stiff, wouldn't close without what I thought was excessive force.  I dropped a couple drops of oil on the detent and spring and worked it in and out a bunch of times with a punch to loosen it up.

Eventually it loosened up and works just fine now.

my first AR did exactly this too.  works fine now, just gentle pressure to close it up.

I thought the BCG was too far forward when I looked at it. An optical illusion.

is that detent catch cut all the way through, like a half moon the whole way through the receiver wall with no bevels inside and out? looks like the upper may be jacked from the angle of the pics. can you get one from the bottom to get a straight look at the bottom side of the top edge of the ejection port? (didn't know how else to put that and reading it makes my head hurt, hope you understand what im trying to say)

eta: a pic just like the last one but with the door open and out of the way. sorry

I'm pretty sure the cut out for the catch is cut right, it looks the same as my other uppers. I will try and get a pic tmrw.

Also, I've already tried working the ball to loosen up the spring with no luck yet. Ill keep trying though

Eta: I've already sent an email to the vendor I bought this from and I'm sure they'll replace it. I'm hoping the door is the issue and not the receiver since uppers are hard to find and they're now out of stock where I got it.

oh from the pics, it looks like it doesn't have the "ramps" rather a straight through cut.

close door tap ir in the middle with a small hammer, do it a couple times-that will fix it.

Yep the detent ball is probably just stuck or packed with something.
