hi, Can anyone tell me why the M4 Barrel looks the way it does ? From the front sight to the muzzle, it has a odd conture or shape,  not like other ar15 / m16 barrels that have one size OD or ( outside diameter ). Is it for barrel harmonics ? I never herd anyone mention that ???????

It's for attaching an M203.

They did that because the M203 was originally designed to mount to a barrel that is the skinny "government" profile, specifically the section of a 20" M16 barrelin between the receiver and the front sight base. They didn't want to change the entire inventory of M203's, so they specified that notch.
