I was wondering if anybody has used dry graphite spray on the action parts of their AR's. Because I know it causes a lot less friction on metal to metal contact but wasnt sure how the black powder residue would effect it.

no use oil, any oil(lube) and a lot of it.

aluminum doesn't like graphite

this

the graphite will damage the aluminum

Yep found it out the hard way, have a new Rock River A2 tube and buffer that was gritty and never liked putting oil or grease in there so tried the Dry Graphite in there. Wondered why my lower receiver around buffer tube threads looked horrible, cleaned it up real quick with some break cleaner and CLP and so far so good. I think I have a permanent mark back there on aluminum now though but havnt really cared enough to worry about it looking pretty.

SO...... question is WHY does Graphite not like aluminum? I would love to here a knowledgeable person in chemicals and metallurgy explain this to us.

Graphite causes the Aluminium to oxidize and create corriosion. The simple verison.

Years ago I helped a buddy with two WECSOG ARs that had had graphite slathered all over the threads where the barrel nuts screw onto the receiver, back when they were assembled.

What...a...nightmare

I don't swear very often, but I would have made a trucker proud on that day.

Not mention graphite absorbs moisture.

I still do not get this why do people want to use graphite when Mobil1 is so cheap.

Yeah, I've always wondered about that too.

A buddy of mine is an armorer at SigArms here in NH. Years ago he gave me his recipe for gun lubricant-and I've been using it ever since. It is nothing more than a 1:1 ratio of Mobil1 synthetic motor oil and Mobil1 synthetic ATF. It stays put, won't burn off, and does a fantastic job. Best of all, two quarts of "ingredients" will last for years

Heck, Pat Rogers proved that even Vagisil would work in a pinch www.ar15.com/content/swat/keepitrunning.pdf

It is all about the electrons.

Step 1 go to auto store and buy Mobil 1
Step 2 drive home and lube with the Mobil 1 you purchased
Step 3 add more just in case. If you don't get oil on your shirt when you shoot, you didn't use enough.
Step 4 stop reading online forums about how graphite is superior

Keep it simple.

Damned electrons. Somebody should ban them.

You can't. Then the universe will collapse on itself

I get oil on an old tshirt I use to wipe down the outside where the oil runs out because I actually use lube!

Just give the AR a good cleaning.  Graphite or Chroline left on an exposed area where the anodize finish is gone will accelerate the corrosion. The anodize finish of aluminium slows the corrosion effect.

Glad I asked before I sprayed, we used to spray it on tow motor forks and watch them try to stop with a metal hopper on it you talk about a metal hopper flying off the end of it but of course nobody was hurt in the making of the prank.
