Is it the upper that determines if it is lefthand or righthand?
Can you use the same lower and swap between right hand and lefthand uppers?
Are the lowers generic except for where the safety or magazine release button is placed on the lower?

Well, sort of...  For the lower to be a TRUE lefty it would need to be machined to have the mag release and bolt catch on the left.  However, there are several aftermarket components you can get that will esentually turn a standard lower into a Lefty user friendly lower.  Would need the Magpul B.A.D. Lever or troy's version, the troy ambi mag release, and an ambi safety.  A lefty upper has the forward assist and ejection port on the left side and the charging handle is lefty friendly.

So far with a ambi charging handle, ambi, safety, ambi mag release, and B.A.D. Lever, I personally don't NEED a LEF-T ar-15...

When I was in the military we weren't issued left handed weapons so I had to learn to use the right handed weapons.  Now that I own my own, I never even thought of getting a left handed gun, it would be like learning it all over again.

Like most everything else, at least for me, you kind of stick with what you were trained on.

I no this was a dumb question but can you just swap a complete lefthand upper and a complete righthand upper using the same lower regardless if the lower was setup to be lefty? Any issues? I have a lefty upper now but have a full righthand upper coming with only the one lower i currently have.

As long as the lower is a standard lower with "ambi" parts you'll be fine with whichever upper.

Not sure about some of these random spec ambi lowers with proprietary parts and machining.

It is a Stag lower and only the safety is switched to lefty so I am good, safety can always be switched back. Thanks for the quick replies.

Most of us on the left side shooters like our right side guns, most everyone runs a ambi safety regardless.

The only mod I made was an ambi safety.

Growing up  shooting lefty I've become accustomed to stuff flying in front of my face.

Yeah, you should be GTG. Until April 2014. Sorry, about you being behind the 'iron curtain.'

I have a LH/ambi rifle. Like said, the upper determines the ejector port side.

There is nothing wrong with being lefty and getting a lefty upper.  Either righty or lefty will work just fine.  I chose a lefty upper, and am glad I did.

Understand that usually about 80% of the input on a "should I buy a lefty rifle" thread is from right handed shooters.  And that the left arm of a right handed person is usually good for just hooking and putting a purse on it.  Whereas being left handed we are much better adept living in a right handed world.

 That last part - SNRK!

Anyways, Lefty me, I tried the Safety on the right-hand side - meh - took it back off. I work the left-side switch just fine; I usually just flip it with the edges of my trigger finger - don't need to be on the trigger, anyways. About the only thing I prefer - and it isn't a lefty/righty item - is the teardrop forward assist; I like it more than the round one. I thought that the right-hand mag release would be a disadvantage but I've gotten the muscle-memory down now so that I can reload pretty fast.
