Hey guys,
I'm in the market for an AR-15 and am struggling to find one in the first place and for a halfway reasonable price. I've managed to find two people in my area willing to sell me their rifle tomorrow and would like some advice before I purchase. -The first is a S&W M&P Sport and has had ~200 rounds fired through it. -The second is a basic Double Star with 16 inch barrel and 30 rounds fired through it. Both come with box and one p-mag. Both selling for $1200 (overpriced I know) I've been in the Army for 4 years so far and have a pretty good understanding of the AR platform. Not a total beginner but I'm much more comfortable with my WWII era rifles. This will be my first personally owned modern rifle. I'm going to use it for a range gun and also to take with me in the woods from time to time. My gut is telling me to go with the S&W but just wanted to get a few more opinions. I'm not too worried about the lack of dust cover or forward assist (don't think I've ever had to use it during my time in the military) but any advice would be appreciated. I will be picking one of these up tomorrow! Thanks again! |

Keep in mind that Smith Wesson's MP15 Sport model is a simplified AR. There's no dust cover, no forward assist, and trigger guard is one piece with receiver.
If these don't matter to you, then it's all good, but if you want an AR that actually looks like an AR, then go with Double Star |
| Can't speak on behalf of the S&W but I do know they have a good reputation on this site. I own a Doublestar and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. It has been a great rifle thus far without even the slightest sign of an issue.... However, you are right. The price on both is pretty steep. That's supply and demand for ya though. |
| save your money and build one with all the bells and whistles. You can build a very nice rifle for 1200. Buy a stripped lower and either use palmetto state armory or civtactical to get everything else. You can probably build a free float AR with magpul furniture for 1100 if you take a saturday and look around. Look at ALG Defense triggers. They've been polished and coated but are still mil-spec, 45 & 65 bucks depending which one you get. Take your time with everything that's going on. If you rush it you'll get something you don't really want. |
