Just got my 14.5" put together. The very first round fired failed to eject. Got it out and shot 5 more. They all cycled fine but they all have odd ridges near the neck of the brass and some lighter rings near the end. The first one failed to eject and the extractor took a notch out of the rim of the casing. Any info on what might be happening?

What brand barrel?
What brand BCG?
Which buffer? CAR, H, H2?
Is barrel and chamber chrome lined?
What brand ammunition?

I'd recommend you carefully inspect the chamber before firing that rifle again.  If you don't know anyone with a borescope, start calling gunsmiths.

I would scrub the chamber real good with a proper chamber brush and a good cleaner.   I had a similar problem with a new build, apparently the chamber had a small amount of debris that I could not see but the scrubbing got it clean enough where the brass would go in and out without sticking.

I'll catch shit for this but here goes. My GF did me a fovor and got me a complete upper from black thorne for my birthday. So i have no idea who made anything. I have read i needed to have everything checked, head spacing being the most important with anything coming from them. so I had that done at the same time I had my flash hider installed and pinned. that being said. the research I did was that the majority of the barrels they use are mossberg. the rest, I have no idea. Is there any way to ID any of the other parts?

Don't be too hard on her, she probably didn't know....   And besides, they say that it's the thought that counts!

I've dealt with Blackthorn in the past, first of all, it is impossible to get them on the phone.  They have spam filters that block any email you try to send them.  Once you get on the approved list to get past their spam blocker you may get a response from them.

Once I got myself on their spam filter approved list and my emails started to go through, I got a couple replies to emails I sent them.  When I began asking them who manufactured their parts and where they came from, are they mil spec. etc...  never heard from them again.

As far as identifying components, I think you will have a tough time with that.  From what I hear, (don't know that it's true) they use seconds to build their rifles.  If that's the case, I would expect that the manufacturer of the parts would have removed any identifying marks from their defective parts before sending them to Blackthorn.

sounds like fun... So best bet would be to send it to a local gunsmith and have them try to figure out whats up?

Probably better would be to try and sell it on Gunbroker or something and upgrade it.

+1 for upgrading

If she is like most women she would never know.

Everyone wins.

Why can't you just return it from wherever it was purchased?

Sounds like a tight chamber. You would need to see if a gunsmith in your area has finish reamer.

While I have never dealt with Blackthorn I have built a few rifles with Mossberg barrels.  All of the Mossberg barrels had very dirty chambers and need to be cleaned before shooting.  The one I shot without cleaning acted exactly as you described.  Once the chamber is scrubbed and cleaned with solvent it will extract reliably.

I'll try cleaning it well and see what I can come up with.

Those markings (rings) or whatever are NOT normal, neither is that hunk of brass out of the case head. I'll bet you have something out of spec in that chamber. I have a hard time believing a go gauge would go into it. Maybe so. From what I have been able to tell, these guys have been around for a long time, under different names. The quality is always the same, customer service the same, also cheaper than normal prices. I have never bought from them because I heard all this on AR15.com. I would give it a good cleaning and try again. I would NOT keep my head near the rifle while shooting it. If it still acts up, I would either get a different barreled upper, or different barrel. I would NOT try and pass this off onto someone else without telling them about it. Just how I do things. Pester the crap out of them about a refund etc. Good luck and don't feel bad.

Thanks,
Mark

Blackthorn strikes again.  And yet we still have people saying they are ok.

Id trash the barrel at minimum. That chamber is so fubard. A gunsmith will just tell you you need a new barrel. And good luck trying to find one.

In the Internet age I have no clue how they stay in business.

I am by far no expert but if this was my gun I would buy a new barrel.  And tools to change it with (since I dont have any yet).

I would locate a Gunsmith with a reamer and check the gas port on the barrel, should be a little bigger than the one on a 20" rifle.

It just sounds like a tight chamber.

Clean in REALLY good with an AR15 chamber brush (NOT a bore brush), put 50 to 100 rounds through it and see if you have any problems.

If that doesn't work, see if your LGS can run a reamer through it, should be cheap.

That would be a big negative. the barrel yes. chamber no. Cleaned it really well last night with the chamber and feed ramp brush my buddy got with his Colt. firing it after work and taking a look.
