Whats up guys,
Just officially joined the forum but I've been lurking on here for months now. Even used the stockpile of information to build my first AR! I just picked up this DPMS today. To be completely honest I'm not sure what model it is. It's a 16' SS barrel 1/9 twist, aluminum free float handguard, and has a JP enterprises trigger in it. I have a couple questions for you guys: It says .223-5.56 on the lower. Does that mean I shouldn't shoot 5.56 out of it? Or will I be fine? It has a silver coating on the BCG, it's definitely not chrome. Can you guys tell me what it is? I want to switch out the aluminum free float for a quad rail free float like the Omega from Daniel Defense. I see that the current aluminum one is a two piece design. From what I understand, I can unscrew the threaded piece off. Is there a special wrench for this? Then after I get the current free float off, is the Omega rail or something similar, plug and play? Or will I have to modify the gas block? Sorry for all the questions at once but I want to get on this asap. Thank you guys in advance for your responses and help! I look forward to learning as much as I can here on the forum Btw, I did my best with the quality of the pics, it's from my phone sorry. http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc171/C230KSPORT00/photo3-1_zps74846810.jpg http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc171/C230KSPORT00/photo2-1_zpsbd1a4841.jpg http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc171/C230KSPORT00/photo1-1_zps5d80d5be.jpg |

The markings on the lower are irrelevant. What is the barrel stamped?
The silvery coating could be nickel boron, but I don't believe that would be factory for this rifle as I don't believe dpms uses it. I don't know about removing the current handguard, never seen one of these in person. I'm also not familiar with the DD rails. If you are wanting a rail that will cover your gas block, the one you have now would need to be replaced. |

Just want to replace the current free float with a quad rail free float. Thanks! |
| The omega replaces plastic handguards which is secured with a delta ring which looks like yours doesnt have. If you want a free float quad rail look at the other daniel defense rails like the DD Lite. |

Then 223 is all I would shoot out of it. And a free float should work just fine with your current gas block then, just make sure you get the right length. Oh okay perfect, thank you. Alright so does anyone know how to remove this current free float I have on? |

Ahh, that looks just like my old DPMS Sweet Sixteen Mine ran like a sewing machine on 223, but had lots of malfunctions with milsurp 5.56. Very accurate, very reliable with 223, and a helluva lot of fun to shoot. They are extremely accurate right out of the box-pick up some Black Hills 69gr SMK for excellent results. Can't help you with the FF tube...sorry. Congratulations, and welcome to the forum! |

Not what I wanted to hear about the 5.56 considering I have a whole case of it that I was excited to use with this rifle but glad to hear it's amazing with .223! Thanks for the welcome guys! Hopefully someone that knows about the FF will chime in

Hi and welcome to the forum!
You appear to have a DPMS Sweet Sixteen or Lo-Pro.... 5.56 is GTG - try different loads of .223 and 5.56, and see what your particular rifle "likes" best. Dunno on the BCG coating, but if it's stock DPMS it'll either be chromed (silver) or phosphate (silver-grey). Changing out the FF tube is not a huge deal, but you'll likely need some tools: bench vise, upper receiver block, torque wrench, and a wrench for the specific FF tubes you are removing and installing (e.g., this). I think the Omega rails are meant to be used with a tower front sight gas block (DD's web site says "not to be used in conjunction with a low profile gas block," at any rate)... the Omega X might be a better option? HTH |

HTH Alright so all I need is the upper block and the specific wrench to remove the current FF. This is what I need correct? http://www.amazon.com/Receiver-Magazine-Polymer-Gunsmith-Action/dp/B006GGC8QQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356234291&sr=8-1&keywords=ar15+receiver+block http://www.dpmsinc.com/Free-Float-Tube-Installation-Wrench_p_1124.html Thanks guy! EDIT: After thinking it over, that first block wouldn't be much help for my situation, I need something like this right? http://www.amazon.com/Tactical-Float-Upper-Receiver-Action/dp/B007IURTCW/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1356235507&sr=8-5&keywords=ar15+receiver+block |
