Im looking for buy a F marked front sight/gas block for my AR. ( im swapping the rail from over the gas block to behind the front sight. The one that I am looking to buy says it must be dilled to fit taper pins. Im really not into the whole taper pins thing. I thought I seen a while back were someone modified there front sight to use allen screws. Has anyone done this before and I dont know if I have to do any mods to the barrel when putting on a front sight base. I ordered a BCM middy 16" Do I have to make relief marks in the barrel for where the taper pins/ Screws will go threw? Sorry every build I have ever done I always ran the rail over the gasblock. Now Im going for a more traditional look. Thanks in advance!

If you want to install a bayonet and have it be useable you need a taper pin installation. Simple clamp on front sights (Armalite) or set screw (White Oak Armament) will not take the abuse without shifting.

F marked front sight bases are easily purchased from a variety of sources. Most already have the pin holes drilled. If your barrel already has taper pin holes milled you are set. If not, send the front sight, the pins and your barrel to ADCO firearms, Sylvania, OH. They will make the machining operation as quick and as painless as possible.

If you decide a bayonet isn't in your future, the barrel must have flats milled for the set screws to tighten against. ADCO does that work too. I have used clamp-on and set screw front sight bases and prefer them over taper pins. It's nice to be able to adjust your front sight base so the rear sight is dead center in it's range of travel.

The simpliest and quickest installation front base is Armalite's National Match clamp on unit. If they are in stock I'd buy it and be done.

Armalite makes a clamp on FSB that would fit your need.
