I currently have a Rock River CAR-15 (pictured below) that I am looking to make lighter. I held my buddy's colt AR-15 and it felt very well balanced compared to my RRA. I'm pretty sure it has to do with my barrel profile (RRA HBAR) and I am wondering if that by swapping to a Government or lightweight barrel (looking Daniel Defense or BCM) and swapping the dominator ii mount for a magpul flip up if I could expect to see a big difference in balance. I am also swapping out the stock for an A2 style because after shooting another Colt with an A2 style I liked that better. (Yes, I know I should have bought a Colt if I liked them so much, but I've had my RRA for 3 years now and its been very reliable albeit heavy and off balance)

This also leads me to my second question. I would like to have two AR-15s. The first is a lightweight carbine that I can use for classes, training, and home defense (where I live I'm more worried about coyotes, foxes, fishercats, etc than people). The second I am looking as more of an SPR. If I can lighten up the RRA that would fit the first AR-15 perfectly. My second one is as follows:
(*already ordered)
*Umlaut Industries AR-15 lower Receiver and LPK
*Magpul MOE grip and Trigger Guard BLK
*Magpul UBR stock BLK
*BCM BCG-Auto
BCM SS410 18" Upper Receiver Group with VTAC Alpha 13" rail
BCM Gunfighter charging handle mod4
Magpul MBUS front and rear
Will look at optics later.

Any thoughts or insight? thanks!

I'll be honest and you won't like the answer.

Your RRA HBAR isn't doing any tricks for being light.

Ditch that big light and run an X300 or the like. Costs money, but light is money. (Or ditch the light completely)

Do you think that if you had a different, possibly non-railed system that you'd save weight?

Maybe a tube system with rail sections that you can put where you need them?

Thats why I was thinking of swapping barrels. I have a M6 taclight that is currently on my glock. I could use that on my rifle and just use the handheld light with my pistol- good idea on that. I was hoping not to put too much more money into the RRA so I could put it into my Umlaut. Although a new PSA lightweight upper is about $100 more than a new barrel so I suppose I could put the RRA upper aside (feasibility on trying to sell it?) and use a PSA for my lightweight carbine. That way I can keep saving up for a good 18" SS barrel for the Umlaut.

Edit: or scope the RRA upper and use a .22LR Bolt?

I would leave the rifle as is.  In my opinion light weight isn't all that great.  I just put together a 14.5 middy that comes in at 6.7lbs.  Recoil impulse was much more than anticipated, yea it's not like a 308 but certainly more difficult to keep on target than my 16" M4gery.  Unless you carry your rifle for an extended period and shoot very little, I just don't get it.

My second RRA came w/ their light weight barrel and it makes a huge difference to me. My first one will probably get retrofitted at some point. RE stocks: these folks have both A1 and A2 stocks which are approx 3/4 inch difference in length
