I apologize if this seems like a stupid question but I'm going to go ahead and ask anyway.

I have a PSA lower with Moe parts kit on the way and I'm now looking for an upper assembly.

I'm looking to get a completely assembled upper with a barrel to put a troy 11" alpha rail on (already have the rail).  Would love to find one with a low profile gas block already installed and no rail but have yet to see that done.  I was thinking about waiting for PSA to get dissy uppers back in stock and grab one of those, take off the FSB and handguards and throw my Alpha rail on.  Since that could be months away what's another alternative? I would also consider buying one of their other uppers while on sale and chopping the FSB.

I live in SC and have grown up here so I like the idea of keeping the majority of this build in state.  That's why I'm pretty much looking to stick with PSA.

So at the end of all this my real question is what do you guys do for your builds as far as upper assembly goes when you're buying a complete upper and don't want a FSB?  Hope this makes some kind of sense...

riflegear offers an upper with lo-pro gas block

Thanks for the heads up on rifle gear.  I'll look into them.

I figured I'd get a hard time for not just assembling my own.  Honestly I'd do that but it seems more expensive and I feel like i'll find away to completely screw it up and blow my face up when I go to fire it.  I'm already terrified of assembling the lower.

Get this:

Don't forget a BCG.

Chop front sight. Put Troy alpha on. Be happy knowing you'll never have a gas block set screw come loose.

Thank you sir.  This was in my line of thinking.  Honestly, I think I'm just tentative on putting a build together in general.  Have this sneaking suspicion I'm going to fail miserably...

I was concerned the first time I chopped a FSB. Go slow, it's not a race, have the right tools to do it with, and it will be fine.

I chopped the FSB on the barrel because (as you will hear in other places) the PSA front sight base pins are near impossible to get out. I have 2. Couldn't get the pins out of either upper.

There is a big thread on chopping a FSB in the "build" section

Here:

about 3/4 way down the first page is the part on chopping a fsb. No need to tap the holes though, just leave on barrel and grind away.

Thanks for the help.  I appreciate all the info.  I've actually read that thread briefly but will go back to it more in depth when the time comes.  I have a buddy with a dremel so I'm thinking that will be the way to go.  Won't have to worry about torqueing the barrel nut either because I'll just leave it on and cut the delta ring off.

Now I just need PSA to put them on sale when I have the cash saved up.

never admit defeat before you begin! Just read all the tutorials, watch videos, and if you are slightly mechanically inclined you will be just fine.

I cringe a little at the idea of cutting down a perfectly good FSB but it's likely the least expensive and definitely the sturdiest way to arrive at a lo-pro GB there is.
