I have a S&W M&P Sport with the stock Magpul rear flip up BUIS.
I have replaced the hanguard with a Troy Alpha 13" tube so the stock FSB is gone, it is now the gas block reshaped to fit under the tube.
I'm not a professional, this weapon is for sport, no hunting and could be relied on for self defense but not likely.

For now, since i already have one, I plan to use an Aimpoint Micro T-1 as my primary aiming device and would like my BU sights to cowitness with the dot when flipped up. I may switch the Aimpoint to an Accupoint TR24 soon, I mention this in case it affects your advice...

1) What do you recommend for a front sight that is compatible with the Magpul rear sight, can flip up, is low weight and can cowitness with the Aimpoint?

2) Is a tube/rail mounted sight good enough for precise long range iron sight work on a 16" barrel or should I mount one to the barrel? I have about 2.5 inches of bare barrel from the end of the tube to the flash suppressor. The Troy Alpha sure seems secure but my inexperience and doubtful nature has me questioning that practice for long range where even a slight flex of the tube would result in Inconsistant POI

3) if I do switch to an Accupoint TR24 does a non- flip down sight become a distraction when using the 1x magnification setting? I imagine that is where I would use it at least half the time so I don't want to choose a fixed base on the barrel if that is an issue...

Thanks!

1) Just get the MBUS front sight. I'm not sure of the weight specs vs metal sights, but I'm sure it's lighter than most. But, you could use any flip up sight that is designed to be rail mounted, and it will work just fine. Make sure it isn't a gas block mounted sight and you'll be fine. As far as co-witnessing, decide whether you want a lower-third co-witness or an absolute co-witness and buy the appropriate mount for your Aimpoint.

2) Depends on what you consider long range. I personally would just mount it on the rail and call it good. I have my MBUS sights mounted to a 15" Troy tube rail and from a rest I can shoot 6" five shot groups or better at 200 yards fairly easily. The Troy rails are solid, I haven't noticed any flex at all. To me, 200 yards is pretty far for irons, especially when shooting at a game animal like a coyote. I might be able to push 250 or 300 on a good day, but hitting something smaller than a person at that range would be tough, at least for me. I'm a pretty average shooter.

3) You will be able to see the sight in the scope if you leave it flipped up or use a solid front sight. Whether or not it distracts you will be up to you. It SHOULDN'T block the crosshairs of your optic, but you'll see it hovering in the lower third of your field of view. There are plenty of people who use a fixed front sight with a scope with out a problem, it just takes a little getting used to. If you're worried about it at all, I would suggest just getting a folding sight. If you're planning on getting a magnified optic, you won't be able to use the back up sights without removing the optic anyway.

No it's not a distraction, but I think folder down is best for this application anyway.

Thanks!

I'm currently running MBUS with both a T-1 and a TR24 set up.

Get a front MBUS and be done with it.
