These pics were taken 3 1/2 weeks ago of a catastrophic failure (kaboom) of an AR at the range..

Federal XM193 in a PSA M4 16" carbine w/approx. 500 rds. through it. . This was the sixth round fired using a MAGPUL mag. No injuries besides a small scratch.

NOT my rifle!

ETA: I see the shooter just had a small scratch.

Just curious, was the barrel MP and HP tested?  Same for the BCG.

What caused it to kaboom?

Damn, glad no one was seriously injured. Good reminder to all in the game, as to what can happen

waz that made from glock parts?

[#12]
I tried to contact the owner about a week after this happened but I didn't get a reply so I don't know what actually caused this.
Whether it was ammo or a failure of the rifle, I have no idea. One piece was found about 50' away. I was about 8-10 ft. away (walking by) when it happened and my left ear was ringing for 30 mins. I didn't have on my ear protection as I wasn't stopping at that range and figured in a few seconds I would be by him. I was wrong. It sounded like a magnum going off.

Glad nobody was hurt.  Were those parts hosed off or wiped down before the photos?  Everything there looks extremely dry.

that would ruin my month :( was it ammo?
8/24/2012 3:11:46 PM EDT

Who know what it was. My guess is ammo. I only say this as if it were the gun you would think it would have went boom earlier, not 500 rounds later. LIke I said though...who knows.

Glad everyone is ok.

It says Federal XM193 in the OP. It sure looks like something cause an over pressure condition to do that much damage.

I don't see what's wrong with the rifle..

Only kidding. I'm surprised they made it out unscathed.

Without further information, the exact cause cannot be determined.  Kabooms can be caused by several reasons.  Hopefully whomever was shooting is okay.

Nothing wiped down. The pieces were picked up and put on the bench. I thought they looked too dry also.

He said they were Fed XM193 and he had some boxes of it setting on his bench so I have no reason to doubt him.

I'm confused.

Would the rifle being dry cause this, or is that just an observation?
8/24/2012 4:19:12 PM EDT
[#30]
All kaboom pics I've seen draw the same "that looks dry" comment. Each time, it's been determined that the kaboom burned away any lube there was.

As far as the Fed XM193, that's concerning. That's about all I shoot because I felt it was a more consistent, safer bet. This is the 2nd kaboom in the last 3 or 4 months I've seen using it though...

I considered that any lube would have burned away before posting that.  I asked because there doesn't seem to be any trace of residue in the pieces of the receiver.  Maybe just some really clean burning lube?  Could also be that it just didn't show in the photos.

So whats your point?  It's been hashed out and died over TOS 3 weeks ago. Tell your friend to contact Federal so that they may replace his AR. Brand doesn't matter now does it?

To my knowledge, all PSA barrels and bolts are magnaflux particle inspected after proof load firing.

And not batch tested either, but tested individually

ETA: Judging by the component quality and performance of my PSA uppers, I am continuously amazed at their modest price point.

And YOU have a point? Some people here don't go to TOS and they might be interested.
By the way, you have failed your "Hall Monitor" exam so don't quit your day job.

You can't double charge a 223 case.

Correct, at least not with any rifle powder typically loaded in .223.

I've never tried to see how much powder I could fit into a .223 case and still be able to cram a bullet on top and still maintain a reasonable OAL.  I've had some compressed Varget loads with a 68gr BTHP, but those were still under max.  My guess is something like 28-30 grains of H335, WC844, TAC, AA2230, or similar would fit.  What that would do to chamber pressures, I don't know.

If it was an ammo problem, my guess is a squib followed by a regular round.  If you're not paying attention, bump firing, practicing triples, etc., it's certainly possible to miss a squib and send another right behind it.

8/24/2012 7:53:39 PM EDT
[#47]
i am sure with ball powder you could get close to 30gr in there. stick its pretty much done around 24.5-25gr (var, 8208, ect)

I'm glad he didn't get seriously injured. That's probably the worst one I've seen yet.

Come to think of it, of all the AR kabooms I've read about on the internet I haven't seen one where the shooter was seriously injured.

I love people who are scared of reloading, you would have to load pistol powder to maybe get that kind of Kaboom!  I'm not sure and would never attempt it.  Some people use pistol powder for reloading sub-sonic ammo but only a small chrage.  A double charge does not apply to reloading .223/5.56.  Have you or the owner of the rifle contacted PSA or Federal??
