| I'm considering going to a 14.5" barrel on one of my guns. I'm just looking over the Daniel Defense ones available at Midway (I love getting stuff from there, it shows up in a day) and am curious about the difference between a light weight contour and the NATO Government contour? I mean other that the obvious overall weight of it. Also, with the shorter barrels is running a midlength gas system ok, or is it bettrt to go with the carbine length gas port? All my AR's have 16" barrels so I thought setting one up with a shorter barrel and red dot for HD might be kind of a fun week-end project, besides they look pretty cool. Any info would be appreciated. |
| A true LW barrel with have a .625 diameter at the gas block seat. A gov't profile barrel will be .750 at the gas block. You can't have a barrel shorter than 16" w/out a tax stamp for a SBR, pistol, or short barrel with a pinned muzzle device that brings the overall length past 16"....SBRs are not permitted in ILLinois anyway. |

It depends on your objective; if you're building an M-4gery, then perhaps you want the stepped, government profile. If you're simply after a light, handy carbine, go with the lightweight pencil barrel. I've a pencil and like it a lot; the whole point of the exercise was a light rifle.
Good advice on the pinned flashider; it allows you to shed most of the unwanted length and still keeps you 16" legal. Adco will do this for you. Moon |

Yes, I know that SBR tag aren't avaiable here in the Socialist Democratic state of Illinois (suppressor tags also banned). Hell, we don't even have CCW in this state, yet the politicians keep bitching that the state is broke. If they set up a reasonable fee/renewal for CCW I bet they could put a nice dent in our state debt.
Anyway, I digress. I was wanting to go to the 14.5 with a pinned FS/C to keep it legal. What I really want is to pick the barrel & the FS/C that I want and then have it pinned by a local gunsmith. I just didn't really know the difference in the gas block sizes on the barrel between the two. Also, iIs there a difference in the longevitiy of the barrel between the two? I mean will you get another 3000 rounds out of the heavier barrel? Also, on a shorter barrel is it better to go with the carbine length or mid length gas system. I'm running gas tubes in a mid length now on the 5.56 & a carbine length on the .300BLK with the same DD lower. I've never had any problems with it short cycling with this set up so far. |
