Hey everyone, I'm a new member, but long time reader of this site and finally getting ready (saving money) to purchase my first 5.56 AR. I've been doing my homework on this site and around the net and talking with a few people who own this platform but I still have a few unanswered questions and would like some guidance. First of all let me tell you what the the life of this rifle will likely entail. Most of its life will be spent shooting at targets, anything from paper to cinder blocks. I'll probably get into some small game hunting with it as well as take some AR combat shooting classes when time and money allow. I'm also planning on having several different uppers in different calibers so that way I have some flexibility with the rifle. This is going to be my go to rifle for just about everything 300 yards or less, so I'd like it to meet/exceed military spec because I want to my able to bet my life and families life on this rifle and its operator.
I've been looking at the Colt LE6920 (I think that's the right number). What I like about the Colt brand, is their quality program. The barrel is made from the most durable materials and has the 1:7 twist so I'm not limited to a specific bullet grain. That is extremely important because I will be making my own loads in the future. While I recognize that 4150 chrome lined barrels will probably exceed my needs, I believe that the best of the best is the only way to go. The research that I've done on the Colt rifles leads me to believe that this is the most durable/reliable rifle I can buy and use out of the box for 1200-1500 bucks, and durability/reliability are a top priority for this rifle. My main questions are: Is it possible to build a rifle with Colt's standard of durability/reliability for the same price or less, and if it is, could someone recommend me where to start looking? Or is there another brand out there that will meet my criteria and cost less? While I'm fairly well studied with this platform, but I'm not entirely sure who makes what parts that will meet my desired goals, nor what questions to ask the manufacturers should I decide to build. I want this rifle to be able to with stand a rigorous work out, and not fail (I know that nothing is guaranteed). I'd also like the rifle to meet/exceed the Colt brand's specification on everything from the barrel down to the trigger. The Colt is what my current goal is, however I can be swayed into many different directions if someone more competent than me can guide me in a direction that accomplishes the stated goals. If I have asked any stupid questions or made stupid assumptions please educate me on why. This rifle is something I'd like done right the first time, and as far as I can tell the Colt LE6920 will achieve my goals. I'll answer any questions I can, and greatly appreciate all feedback and responses to my query. Thanks, Kevv |
| There are a number of rifles that are equal to Colt quality (and I own 7 Colts). Bravo Company Manufacturing, Noveske. Larue, Daniel Defense. That being said, the prices on a new 6920 are so low now (Vendor at a local gun show last week was selling them for $945 plus tax) that it's pretty much a no brainer IMHO. You should be able to find one online for around $1,000. |
