Just took my first AR build to the range.  It's a Spikes Lower with a PSA 16" mid-length upper with a MOE stock.  I felt a little cramped holding the rifle.  I'm 6'2 with about a 6'4 ish wingspan.

1.  At what height would you say a standard rifle is not going to be optimal?
2. Are there specific stances or positioning that can make it more comfortable?

I'm 6'2 and my brother is 6'6".  We both have several ARs.  I shoot with my arms tucked into my body, and my nose to the charging handle.  I try to keep as tight of a shooting platform as possible.  It seems to work for us.  YMMV

I'm 6'4" and shoot my AR comfortably. I have a 16" M4 type, with a sopmod stock and I don't even have the stock fully extended. But none of the nose to charging handle stuff, that's awkward

Magpul makes Buttplate Spacers for the MOE stock - I was in the same boat, it felt too short.  I added the 0.70" pad, and it definetly felt better to me with the added length.

Also, a "forward lean shotgunning stance" seems to work better than a upright rifle stance fo me with the AR.

Where is the buttstock on your shoulder? Do you hold the stock relatively low on your shoulder or higher like the following pic?

The shooter in this pic is 5' 10" with the CTR (close cousin to the MOE) extended all the way out on a 6 position receiver extension.

Try shooting less like Mrs Tannehill (bladed to target)

And instead turn your shoulders more square to the target.  I am 6'3" and I only have my collapsible stock one notch out from fully closed.  My nose is just touching the charging handle which gives me a good point of reference to aid in obtaining a consistent cheek weld.

Here is an example I found in google images

I am 5'11" and run my MOE on the second notch from fully collapsed. The stock goes more into my chest than a traditional hold. It is what I learned before I retired from the USAF. I got taught that way to keep your body armor squared up to the enemy. Rotating 90 like a traditional stance exposes your lesser protected sides and armpits. I also run my nose to the charging handle to get a consistant cheek weld.

I'm 6'4" and I use the first notch back from fully collapsed on a standard M4 stock. On the UBR I shoot with it fully collapsed.
It will just take you a little while to get use to getting in behind the weapon.

A longer rail helps alot.

I need a 10" rail minimum for a comfortable grip.
I prefer a 12"rail

Thanks guys.  Went to the range Friday again and had my buddy watch how I setup at the line.  Shoulders were not even close to square even though it felt like I was for the most part.

Much more comfortable now.

I've spaced out my Ace stock to 1 and 1/2", anit's still a lettle short for me.  I like to get right up into my scope with a tight cheek weld.  I guess a rifle with no recoil will let you get away with a lot.

O-me
