Hi I just did some work on my AR. I have a rock river I changed out the upper and added a Larue flat top and free float rail. the barrel is the same as well as the bolt. Do I need to check the head space because of the new upper or only if there is a new bolt or barrel combination
Thanks Peter |

If you did not change either the bolt or barrel, you haven't done anything to affect headspace. Whether or not it chambers a round is irrelevant if the bolt and barrel are not within tolerance TOGETHER, so changing either the bolt or barrel is a situation that calls for at least thought as to whether or not to check headspace. New bolt with old barrel, or new bolt with old barrel are both questionable combinations, while new bolt and barrel at the same time probably aren't.
Now is the point at which someone might chime in and say "it's a standardized platform so any new bolt or barrel will be OK.". 15 years ago I would agree. Today there are so many different sources for bolts and barrels that I do not consider the standardized status of the AR platform as a guarantee that any given new bolt would be safe in any given barrel, or vice versa. |
