What is it exactly? Not sure what it's called, but I need a new one (actual pin that goes in place of where the cotter pin is). Since I've had the gun (S&W M&P15a) every time I've shot it I just happened to notice it would start backing out and id just push it back in. Got done shooting today, got home and began cleaning my gun. When I separated the upper from the lower the switch fell out so I stuck a cotter pin in for the time being. What does that do piece do exactly and once I gt a new one what can I do to prevent it from happening more? |

You need a bolt catch roll pin. Likely the factory one was just a bit undersize. The Citizens Armory is a good place toget one without being raped on shipping.
While you're at it, make sure you didn't lose the little buffer and spring that goes behind the bolt catch. |

I've had the idea for a while to design a hex screw to go in there. You could tap the hole and have a hex screw that was threaded on both ends, but smooth like a roll pin in the center so the bolt catch would rotate on it. It's a work in progress though. It is out there. http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=560957 |

If you don't follow it or are not lucky you can mess things up. |
| My local hardware store has the roll pin size for the bolt catch. It's 0.437X0.093 by spec and a 1/2" by 3/32" works fine. You may need to file it shorter by .060 or so. There are split pins and true roll pins, there is a difference. Lot of LPK's use split pins. |

Mega has a billet lower with threaded bolt catch |

Thx for the help. Called S&W and they're sending me one free. Floor plate latch pin is what they call it in their parts list. Hopefully that's the correct part. I told him the bolt catch roll pin and that's what he came back at me with. Anywho, thanks again. Your terminology was correct. A floor plate is a part of a magazine hopefully he didn't have his head (you know where) and was looking at pistol parts list. |

yeah wtf smith its a bolt catch roll pin a floor plate latch pin may fit but i don't think it's right I'm thinking the S&W rep was referring to the triggerguard roll pin, which is larger and longer than the bolt catch roll pin. It will NOT work for the bolt catch. OP, if I were you, I'd do one of these two things: a) Go ahead and order one from The Citizen's Armory (about $5), or b) put a WTB ad in the EE. If I had a spare one, I'd send it to you free of charge. |

It's just a standard roll pin. Go down to the local hardware store an pick up the appropriate size.... 29 cents and a bag of charcoal for the weekend BBQ. I think we are beating a dead horse here. It has to be a approved S&W part apparently.
A two bit part at most any hardware store. |
