| Hello, I'm pretty excited about picking up my new Ar next week and have been spending sometime looking at a lot of aftermarket goodies. Being that I spent most of my dough on the rifle and ammo I was wondering what you would consider to be an essential upgrade. This will be my S.H.T.F rifle and I'd like to do some aftermarket upgrades that will increase its functionality and performance. For example I was looking at replacing the charging handle with a BCM gunfighter charging handle. I know im not going to be playing commando but I'd like to upgrade aspects of the rifle that are weak points or ones that will benefit from being upgraded. The rifle I purchased is a Sig m400. So what do you think? |

You will find out what you want to change once you use it.
a sling is a big helper so are optics. just see if anything is uncomfortable or akward to you once you go use it and go from there. What you think you might want reading and pondering it may be the last thing you upgrade once you shoot it. |

I agree with the above.
1. Sling - Good one like Vltor or Viking Tactics 2. BCM Gunfighter grip and charging handle. 3. Solid red dot sight (EoTech or Aimpoint) No chinese crap (you said it was for SHTF and not Sunday plinking at the range.) 4. A nice weapon light (Surefire or Streamlight) Once you are comfortable with the setup, see if you need any of the following: 1. Quad rail to mount accessories (Daniel Defense, Troy, etc) 2. Rail covers (LaRue, Magpul, etc) 3. Vertical foregrip or AFG 4. BAD Lever ( I love mine) |
| A lot of people seem to bash on optics on here, however, I have met very few people who were not benifited by using an RDS. It will speed you up in aquiring and accurately hitting what you're aiming at. I would go with an Aimpoint or Eotech if you can afford it. |

A sling is a must have for any rifle IMO, and a light is also very important. A red dot with go battery life would also be on the list possibly, but they are not cheap. Save for quality accessories, no matter what you choose. Buy once, cry once. I omitted ammunition and magazines because in my mind that's like telling people to buy gas for their cars; these are items that are absolutely necessary to the function and use of the weapon and not really accessories. However, I realize that there are a lot of people out there with AR's that have only a few magazines and hardly any ammo so I guess it is valid advice these days. |

I REALLY don't understand people that don't think a light is an absolute necessity on a defensive rifle. Responding to things that go bump in the night requires a light on your rifle. For HD/SHTF a light is a MUST just like a sling is a must. I would not say it is unnecessary but getting the right light for what works for you is essential. Telling him buy a light does him no good. Shooting the rifle figure out what works is a better idea. Does he wants a 2 or 3 cell light, 200 lumen or 80 lumen, or pressure pad/button??? |

Setting up a rifle for you and your uses, body mechanics, preferences, etc... is the most important aspect of choosing any accessory, be it a light or sling or fore grip or optic or ANY other "enhancements". I was speaking more to people who say you don't need any light on a defensive rifle. Telling him to buy a light DOES do him good. Now it is up to him, not me, to choose what light is best for his needs. I can only make recommendations, it's the responsibility of the people asking for advice to then go and find out what works for them by getting out there and training. |

| A sling and a light are things that are not on your gun that are necessary items. Everything else is just an improvement for stuff already on your gun. An RDS would be the next best thing to be improve the gun after the light and sling. Mags and ammo are necessary items to make the firearm operable (you knew you had to buy these things to get it going), but the OP was asking for things to make the gun itself ready for use in a practical sense. Everything else is just gravy. |
