Not sure if this should be here or in Industry but I will try here first.
What is a good way build a non functioning AR that will sill cycle and can be droken down to teach cleaning/mechanics/handling? I have a few friends that want me to teach their wifes/girlfriends/kids the basics of a modern sporting rifle, and one of them is very active in the Boy Scouts and other community minded groups that I would be more than willing to teach. They would all be WAY more confortable knowing that the rifle was non functioning and I would be more comfortable knowing that they wouldn't break one of my functioning AR's I have plenty of older parts around, but I have never deliberatly built a non functioning rifle...lol |

Don't remove the firing pin, bad things will happen.
If you want a 100% safe rifle grind the tip off the firin pin and weld the firing pin hole in the bolt shut. Then plug the bore at the muzzle and clearly mark the rifle as "Training Only". Will hand cycle dummy rounds but will never fire. |

I would go with a Tokyo Marui M4 airsoft rifle; they are pretty realistic looking, right down to the military markings (if you can find one that has not been mangled up).
I have one and I am gonna add an M203 and some other doodads to make it look like the ones used in Afghanistan. If you get bored, then put a battery on it and plink some beer cans with the kids in the backyard.

modified fp, dummy rounds, in the film industry we use either specific blank guns or guns that have had the chamber and muzzle plugged so there is no possibility of a live round ending up in there or firing a live round into a blocked barrel... ouch.
Would hate to trash a barrel like that unless its already shot out. We shot real guns in the boy scouts. We learned about firearms safety first. modifying firing pin should be all that's really required to make sure it's safe for your purposes. maybe fill the chamber and bore with a bright silicone and a bright orange muzzle cap this would be semi reversible but, you wouldn't be able to demonstrate proper bore cleaning. |

I figured modifying the firing pin was the easiest/safest way to go. I can't in good conccience destroy perfectly good parts to do this but I can moddify a firing pin. (I have a drawer full of new and used)
I am basically just teaching cleaning, general operation etc...just a field strip and basic explanation of the major parts and functions. I am not doing this for money. It is not a certified class or anything. It all came about because a buddy of mine can't teach his wife...it is not that she isn't a cabable intelligent woman, just that when he talks she doesn't listen! Same thing happens when I coach my wife to lift weights...just a communication disconnect....then it blossomed into "can one of my other friends come too?" then it was "my son is in the scouts and is learning firearms safety etc, can he come too?" I am all about safety and figured why not, at least if I see them at the range I will know that they at least have some basic knowlede.
