Hello, I am a complete noob to ar's and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I am interested in getting an AR Rifle and was wondering if someone could recommend a brand/model that might suit a beginner well. I am not looking to spend alot of money but would like a rifle that I can grow into and still have loads of fun with, when I get my experience.
Any thoughts on wich brand model and a price range would be great. Either new or used. Thanks, Nick |

Welcome Nick. There are a lot of great manufacturers out there. Giving us a price point, and the "intended purpose" of the rifle will help in narrowing down some recommendations. Since I'm a fan boy, you can't go wrong with a Colt ![]() I guess the purpose would be short/long range target practice and home defense. As for price range I know AR's are not cheap so a safe estimate would be under 1k. |

Also, look into brands like PSA (Palmetto State Armory), BCM (Bravo Company USA), RRA (Rock River Arms), Spike's Tactical, Stag, etc. You can also build your own, which will save you a few bucks and you'll learn a lot about your rifle. If you are looking for long range, I suggest looking into some of the 18" and 20" offerings, if you need precision accuracy. A carbine can hit targets well beyond 500 yards, but you'll get better results with a longer barrel due to increased velocity. I highly recommend Rock River Arms if you want a super accurate, factory built rifle. |

I spent way more money dicking around with parts trying to build a franken gun the first time around than I would have if I picked up a 6920 to begin with. I still ended up with the 6920. Buy once, cry once ETA- If PSA still had that patrol rife deal going on for a grand, that came with the PRO, I'd look at that. The crappy thing is that some of the quality makers are always out of stock (BCM/PSA)

Thanks guys for the info.
I would love to put together my own rifle although I am hesitant due to my very limited knowledge. I have been looking around local gun shops and found a RRA LAR-15 for 800(used), Stag model 3 for 850(new), and a Bushmaster c15 orc for 700. There are still some more shops I am going to check out. I hate just purchasing something to find out later that it was not a good deal. So I figure I will take my time and search for the best bargain around. |

I have 2 and they have been tip top. |

PSA M4A1 Patrol Rifle OP, if you can swing the extra couple hundred dollars, this is the direction I would take. You're basically paying $800 for the rifle as the included optic sells for $400. |

Im a spikes fan and you cant go wrong with one one of the best ARs i've owned, also Colts and BCM are another great rifle id recommend. My local wal mart has Colt 6920s for $1087.97 they also have a few bushy and a brand i cant remember. but Spikes tactical has there base rifle for around $865 and you can get one with a rail for about $1000. I would avoid the consumer grade rifles put out by the big companies (with the exception of Colt). Stick with companies like BCM, Colt, Spikes, PSA, etc and you'll be getting a much better quality/price ratio. |

My first AR, just bought in the last two years or so, was the Stag Arms M2T. It was easy to learn, easy to work on, and fit together tight, like I always imagined it should. over 2000 rounds, Never failed, never jammed, just got dirty and ran me out of money buying ammo. I bought an EoTech red dot which I later realized I would have traded for an Aimpoint due to the fact that for whatever reason I acquire a target easier with 1 dot then i do with the EoTech dot setup.
I also got jiggy with it and purchased the Slide Fire stock that allows you to repeat shots just about as fast as you want down range with a decent degree of accuracy. Closest thing I ever shot to an auto, and the Stag ate it up. Clip dump after clip dump, it never failed. Sold it cause I needed money a few months back, kick myself every day for it. I'll have another soon :-) They have options in the 700.00 range also, at least that's what I remember. I would pick a stag now, personally after owning one, over any other brand. I have shot Colt , Doublestar, RRA, Bushmaster, the Stag continues to come in on top for me. But I'm a noob too, what do I know. I still have a soft spot for a SCAR however, but that's a whole different ballpark. |

Clips go in M1 Garands and are used to load ammunition into magazines. |
