What's the best rifle for the money if an old guy wants a 20" barreled standard AR-15 with a fixed stock and carrying handle - kinda like what I learned to shoot some 40 years ago? I want to keep it simple - don't plan to do much but shoot it at the range with iron sights - 200 yards max probably.
Most everyone seems to like M-4 type rifles, but I just want something old school that I can take out of the box and hit the range. Any suggestions? |

If you're plinking I would go with a government profile barrel (bravo company sells such an item, a brief search returned no other complete uppers). It will be about 1 pound lighter and I don't think you'll notice the barrel heat issues.
If you want an accurate iron sighted rifle why not go with something designed for service rifle competition? It will have a stainless barrel and appear normal but have the barrel free floated under the plastic handguards. The sights will be 1/4 or 1/2 minute clicks on both the X and Y axis and it will come with a 2 stage trigger installed (not exclusive to service rifles, see the RRA above which has a heavy barrel and 2 stage but not the sights or the free float). |

Can't go wrong with Stag's 20" |

I would really suggest the 20" A3 or removable carry handle type. Put the handle on and it's just like your old rifle from back in the day. Take the handle off and you can mount optics and not be over 2" above the bore. Don't worry about the front sight with magnification, anything above 3X and the front sight fades away.
Lots of quality stuff out there. Rock River, BCM, etc and your own lower makes a nice combo, or you could get a Colt, Bushmaster, Armalite etc for a little more. |
