Hey, I recently took my 16" BCM midlength upper to a range, and shot with a 6x Barska scope. I was getting hand sized groups (that is to say, ~8-9" groups) with 30 rounds at 100 yards. Now, I'm not a good shot at all, and didn't really zero my scope (got a 2" 3-shot group at 25 yards and said good enough).

I was using PMC bronze and WMA .223 55gr ammo in a 5.56, 1x7 barrel, so that might also affect accuracy (or so I'm told).

Anyways, I'm curious, if anyone has a BCM midlength upper, what is the full "potential" of the rifle?

Edit: Meant to say WPA ammo.... I was at a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) which is what was the mixup but I digress.....

Mine will shoot to the potential of M193.

I haven't shot any precision ammo through it.

Much better than that......

Try some different ammo.  I've had PMC bronze that my upper hates.  4" groups at 100 yards with a concentration around 2".  Lots of fliers.

Cheap ammo + cheap scope + a self proclaimed below average shooter will get you bad groups...

I generally shoot XM193 out of both of my BCM uppers and can get 2"-3" groups @ 100 yards if I really try.  I've done slightly better with match ammo but then again I'm not the greatest shot either.

Your scope is junk. No offense, but that brand is not known for its quality or accuracy.

Put a decent set of irons on there and you will at least equal that.

Put a decent scope on there, in a decent mount, and you'll probably cut that in half, at least.

Your scope bouncing around (whether it's the mount not being tight enough or the actual scope sights moving around due to it being a cheaper scope) will probably throw you off a ton.

I'd try your irons out and keep it steady and see how you do.

I'm actually better at pure accuracy shooting using my irons than I am with my red dot.

You def need a better scope to go with that BCM upper.  I don't under why people put good money in a rifle and throw a cheapo scope on the top of it.  No offense, just trying to help.  Get a Vortex PST, Leupold VR-X, or something decent on that bad boy and you will be g2g!

My general rule of thumb for matching a scope to a rifle is you should spend about 50-75% of the value of your rifle.

I cant have a $1k rifle and a $50 scope and expect tight groupings.

+1 on the scope.  I had a Barska and it would NOT hold zero.  It was a new scope on an old gun that I knew very well.  I put a Nikon on it and the groups went right back to < 1MOA.  I should have known there would be an issue when I took off the turret covers and found:

Yes, the top turret was marked "UP" as well.

You sure you don't have it on sideways?
