Ninety rounds of mixed ammo, mostly Tula, some Federal I had lying around and also some PMC. Yeah I know what the hell am I doing shooting all that crap for. It's because I want to test the limits of this gun.
Not really all that happy with the results. Not too disappointed either though. Had a couple of failures to feed right out of the gate with the Tula. Couldn't hit the broadside of the barn at first at 25 yds. I literally had no idea where my shots were hitting but that's why we zero our weapons right. Problem is I was shooting at a public range so because I could not see where my shots were hitting (I knew they weren't anywhere near the target) and i had to wait until the range was cold to check it (20 minutes) it took me forever to zero. I started off shooting with irons but quickly switched to my Eotech when i realized i wasn't anywhere near the target. I was using these 8" Walmart Dirty Bird targets and I stupidly put only one in the center of the shot-to-shit cardboard. So when the range went cold I hustled down and grabbed my target, walked it back to the bench and put up four of those damned dirty birds. Next i walked it back down and placed it at 15 yds. Baby steps. i started the second volley by shooting at the very center where the four dirty birds met. Voila I hit paper low and left. So I start adjusting the Eotech. A feew rounds later I'm dead center in the middle of the four targets so i shift my aim to a single target and proceed to put like 10 rounds in one hole. HooAH! Then I get a call from my idiot friend who's an hour late asking where I'm at. I tell 'em I shooting. He tells me he's at the range but they won't let him in because he doesn't have earpro. So I walk out and hand him some earpro...I always carry enough for the whole fam. Next I set up my kid so he can pop off a couple of mags. Got it all on video. By now i think I'm starting to annoy the people around me because i'm shooting video of my kid while yelling instructions to him and to make things worse the Tula is short stroking. GREAT! Well anyways gave me a chance to teach the kid some malfunction drills. Afterwards my friend needs mee to help him zero. He's never shot an AR before. I helped him build his first a couple of weeks ago. By now it's 7:30 and I gotta pick up my other kid by eight. Aaaand it starts raining. But i gotta help my friend zero so i spot for him, help him make adjustments and get him on the bullzeye. Whoo hoo, gotta haul ass cuz now it's 10 til eight and i got a 20 minute drive to go get kid #2 and it's a fuckin monsoon. Kid and I bolt, i go to grab the truck and pull it up front Kid hands me the AR through the driver side window and hops in the truck. Drive down the highway with the AR sittin on the bench between me and the kid. Get to the place, still got my sling on (QD) and 20 rounds of .223 in my cargo pocket. Had to talk to one of the coaches. She's probably lookin at me like wtf why is this guy dressed like that and whats that chingleing in his pocket (keys around my nek) hehe. Gotta figure out what the hell is causing the short stroking. Hope it's just the ammo. Never even got to zero my irons. Oh and my Rainier rail wasn't torqued nearly tight enough cuz it started to walk out on me after 30 rounds. No worries though I brought tools. Got that sucker on there tight. No problems whatsoever from that point on. Can't wait til my next range trip. Oh yeah and the next guy to my buddy's lane was shooting a Knight's SR-15 with an Acog. SWEEEET! I've built quite a few AR's over the years, be it mine or a friends. The one thing I have learned is not to shoot at a SMALL target while doing the initial sighting in. I put a propane tank (not full, duh) or like sized target out there and see where I hit in the dirt around it. Once I'm hitting the tank I switch to the target. This can be done with just the dirt hill but a metal target makes it more enjoyable. BTW, good story, sounds like my life I have to say the one exception to this was my 603 build. It was dead nuts on first shot out |
