so i just bought a troy trx extreme and they only supplied me with the wrench to install the new troy barell nut. we ussed a pair of channel locks and put a ton of tourque on it but it didnt budge. im not sure why but it is on there. thinking of using a propane totch just to heat it up a little to get it loose. any ideas are apreciated. do i really need a barrel nut wrenche?

Nothing beats the right tool for the job.

If you don't have an armorer's wrench, I'm guessing you don't have a receiver block either.

You do know how easy it is to distort / damage that upper, right?

Take a deep breath, delay gratification for a few days, and use the right tools.

let me guess your read guns and anvil guide to gun smithing. what manufacture of rifle do you have? you need to apply heat and use the proper wrench to break it loose . brute force will screw something up.

Since you obviously don't want to buy the barrel nut wrench I would switch to a pipe wrench. youve probably already screwed up the barrel nut, so it shouldnt hurt it much more. You can also cut the barrel nut with a dremel if its on too tight. I had a frozen barrel nut that broke my Spikes wrench and I ended up cutting it off.

I see a disaster looming on the horizon.  There is no excuse for using the totally incorrect tools to work on any firearm.  Why unnecessarily fuck up a good gun?

My barrel nut wrench has a 1/2 drive hole for a torque wrench so the barrel will be tightened properly. They are not expensive and you will do the job correctly.

OP - Seriously???? I don't want to sound harsh but come on....have you ever worked on something in general, not necessarily related to ARs, and screwed up because you didn't have the right tools?!?!?!?

Get a cheap barrel nut wrentch. i am all about saving money but i have learned with these kind of things it better just to eat the 20-30$ and do the job right.
Good luck

Got a feeling that it might be too late for a barrel nut wrench....too chewed up from the Channellocks.
Anyway, we'd have to try to convince him that he needs a vice, clamshell, etc as well.
That ain't gonna happen.

I envision one guy standing on the weapon (human vice) and the other wielding the pipe wrench.
As seen in Pakistani School of Gunsmithing videos.

Then it's more popcorn while they try to get the new hand guard installed correctly.

It is a very fine line between HOT aluminum alloy and MELTED aluminum alloy. Keep ANY excess HEAT away from this job. Like he said, get the proper tools.
