I like the idea of a light and compact SB AR15(11.5") but am not sure of the effects it might have on velocity, accuracy and other differences if might have compared to a 16" barrel. So how would a 11.5" barrel compare to a 16" barrel in all aspects?
Im sure a similar question has been asked before so if it would be easier please link me to the topic. Thanks |

Thanks, I did not know there was a section for SBR |

I love all my SBR uppers and the way I look at it is....if I need to shoot 600 yds, I'll use my bolt .308.
I remember reading in one of the many gun magazines that someone was using a PWS Diablo uppers and shooting pretty far. (Couldnt tell you what magazine or how far) |

After extensive research on SBR's, I came to the conclusion that I wouldn't go any shorter than a 14.5" barrel for a 223. I don't find the great losses in velocity worth the couple less inches personally...and as said, this is solely pertaining to the 223 caliber in particular.
I currently own just one AR, and orginally intended to make it an 11.5" or 12.5" SBR, but the research made me scratch that idea and go with a 14.5" barrel with a welded Battlecomp 1.5. I still love SBR's, and really want one...so that's why my next purchase will be a 10" Noveske 300 Blackout. My feelings are for SBR's, go the 300 Blackout route. That round does far better with the shorter barrels. Just my 2 cents. |

Barrel length has no effect on accuracy. Velocity will suffer but heavy OTMs will still fragment reliably out to 75 yards or so out of an 11.5" barrel and bonded soft points will perform really well out to a couple hundred yards. In other words, you'll have a hard time finding a situation where a private citizen would be legally and morally justified in shooting where the range exceeds the practical capability of the weapon system.

Excellent explanation! It is important to remember that barrel length has little if any affect on accuracy. |

I'll add that it will greatly boil down to personal preference, and your intended use of the the rifle.
Some folks own several AR's, and every last one of them is an SBR, and they swear by them. If you intend to do most of your shooting within 100 yards, then an 11.5" barrel should be more than adequate for a 223. But if you intend to do some precise shooting in say the 300-500 yard range, I wouldn't even remotely consider any barrel shorter than 14.5". For me, wanting to engage targets at 300 plus yards combined with the great losses of velocity when going under a 14.5" barrel ultimately led me to find SBR's in the 223 caliber to not be a route I'd like to go. But that's just me. |
