I’ve got a question ... I took a PSA stainless midlength upper with a A frame front sight. Pulled it apart and put it back together on an A1 style receiver. I have not shot it yet, but suspect the front sight will be too tall. Any easy fix, or am I worrying about nothing?

I ran into a problem with my middy/fixed stock - shooting some IMI 77gr I popped a primer. Discussing it on another forum 'over-gassed' was mentioned, which started me really thinking and also checking out the AR. Right off the bat it hit me that when I bought the refurbished M16A1 stock, tube, buffer and spring as a set, I did not test or replace the spring - mistake #1 - the spring was weak and visibly shorter than a new one (I do not yet have 1000 rounds on this set-up so it was well-used when I installed it). Also, a rifle spring and buffer may still be too light for a mid-length gas system with certain ammunition, like IMI 77gr Razor Core that is known to be hot - mistake #2.
I happened to have on-hand a new Wolff 'Standard' rifle spring so I installed it - immediately felt a stronger resistance on the charging handle. Took it to the range yesterday and everything runs fine with no more loose primers and I got my accuracy back too. Accuracy can be affected by a weak spring because of early extraction (which causes blown primers) and hammering in the buffer tube. So anybody running a rifle receiver extension with a mid-length gas, which should be just about everybody in this thread, you might have to change springs more often and/or use a heavier spring depending on the loads you use.

Love the ground down fsb, I'm too chicken to do that. For now... ' Yes, 'Medium Contour'. Hasn't been available for some time. When you check the dimensions for the 'RECCE' barrel it matches. Cutting off the top of the sight base is not a big deal but I see you still have a BUIS so it would be out of the question. I did it mainly to save a few ounces out front plus maybe a slightly more clear view through the ACOG. If you ever do it, use a hacksaw and leave a little meat above the gas tube. I mainly used a file to round off the stubs and I still left a little flange there - kind of protecting the gas tube. Assuming Parkerizing, touch-up with Alumahyde II 'Dark Parkerizing'. |

Finally! Got the neutered carbine barrel replaced with a mid length pencil. Love it! ...not in love with the hand guards, though. I got these off the EE a couple years ago. I need to find some good 'skinny' mid lengths.

Anderson lower, M4E1 Areo upper, Aero Midlength barrel with pinned FSB, PSA premium bolt carrier. I have a primary arms 2.5x prism scope on it now.
