This set-up is exceptionally sweet and has not had any kind of failure at all (only about 300 rounds so far) and as of today is shooting into a 2" ball at 50 yards with a 4x scope. http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb27/INLAND44/Guns/sightpic.jpg A better picture, and after finding the right ammo and putting in a better trigger set, I have shot 1.25" at 100. It likes 62gr handloads and PRVI 75gr OTM. I'm sure many other kinds of quality ammo would be good too - just haven't tried them yet! Balance is good too, as you can see it naturally rests on the grip and magazine with nothing else touching. |

Do you like the A1 upper middy or the AP middy setup better? Reason I ask, I might take the c7 upper off my carbine and make a c7/a1 middy upper and put a flat top on my carbine. Or leave the carbine alone and flattop the middy barrel and put an ap pro on it. |

A set of Armalite demo furniture that they made for the AR10B back in the early 90s when they were trying to drum up interest for the new rifle. Supposedly hand painted aluminum tube and plastic grip and stock; they made around 100 of them (at least, that's what one of the guys at Armalite told me when I asked them about the set). ARP 6.8 SPC middy barrel mated to a Les Baer matched receiver set (old pic still had the Tom Sawyer MFG lower). |

Thanks - that top one is my sons and I really like the way it turned out too but he's wanting to upgrade it to something more like mine (the bottom one). FYI, both guns have Colt 'CS' stocks which IMO is the best fixed stock for the AR platform. Shame they're so hard to find. |

Expensive too, for what they are. I think the Cav Arms A1 stocks are a decent modern option, but their buttplate is junk from what I understand. I would like to see one cloe up. Frankly, I use standard A1 stocks and doubt I'll ever need to buttstroke someone with it, so they work fine for me. I really like fixed stock carbines, and use a GP style sling on mine - very simple, very cheap, and the fastest transition to handgun (no adjustment) I've found, but I'm no ninja either.

They will work and I'm not worried about them breaking but they're too hollow/cheap feeling for my tastes. I'm not worried about butt stroking anybody but I do like the extra weight of the CS stock which helps balance out the rifle and give it a more solid feel. Originally Posted By Morg308:

My 16" middy is kind of my generally purpose rig. (Range shooting, 3-gun, hunting, whatever) and I think a fixed stock is more appropriate for that type of rig. I do prefer a retractable stock on my carbines though because I'm more likely to use them for training classes and CQB type shooting. For that type of shooting, I like being able to shorten up the stock so that I can more easily square up to the target. Right tool for the job and all that. |
