I"m undecided between the MK12 mod1 and a SDMR type. I'm leaning more towards the SDM as I like using iron sights and wouldn't mind a rifle with an acog also as I don't have one of those. What manufacturers make the SDM barrel. I know white oak does..any others? I would need Daniel Defense 12.0 Rail also correct.
Any recommendations of good upper/lower to buy for the build? I think the army uses armalite? I think this would suit me better as it would cover a service type rifle as well as being able to put on the carry handle for irons too. Alan |

I already have a rra varmint 24" for long range precision work thats why I will probably go the SDMR clone with acog as I don't have any rifles to fill that void. Anyways, can I get a Krieger SDM barrel? I couldn't locate one on their site.
A carry handle wont work with this? I was under the impression you could switch out between the two. What rear buis is recommended so you can dial up elevation and windage? I'm not too educated on this setup so appreciate any help. Alan |

Quoted:
The army SDMR was a fluted 20" Krieger barrel. Operation parts has the dd m4 rail on clearance, check them out. The army would have used FN OR COLT lowers and uppers. The Marine Corps SAM-R used the Krieger, the Army SDM-R used a 20" Douglas Match barrel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Squad_Designated_Marksman_Rifle I used one of the Douglas barrels from Compass Lake Engineering, who cut the 12 flutes in it for me, was around $375 back in 2007 if I recall. http://www.compasslake.com/
I've got a Burris Fullfield II lighted reticle scope, 3-9x in a Larue LT-104 mount on it right now, I like it better than the ACOG on the longer range rifle. Lower is a RRA with a Geissele high speed DMR trigger. I think I used a CMT upper with a Colt BCG. DD 12.0 rail. The FSB is attached with 4 set screws. |

I was in the exact same boat as you. I built a spec SDM rifle about 2 years ago except I put a leupold mk4 on to check groups and it never came off.
However, now that I am using a higher magnification scope the sdm spec is not what I like. Slowly I am pulling most of sdm spec items off and replacing with something more fitting of a scoped rifle. The fixed front sight base was the first thing to go, and now the DD rail is on the chopping block. Just my opinion, but think really hard before committing to the sdm rifle as it ended up fitting a different role better for me. As far as your barrel question, check with compass lake engineering. They can profile what ever barrel you would like to SDM specs that will shoot great. |

Couple of important points that are starting to come out:
Clones are great, and they certainly have their place, but for most people they can be an expensive waste of money. If you build one, but end up changing sites, rails,optics....really what have you got? You could probably have built something better suited for YOU without spending un-needed $$$.It sounds like what you want is a "recce" style build....which really means some type of rifle fitted for YOUR mission, whatever that may be. That said, you can acquire the correct SDMR barrel from Rainier Arms, fluted, with the proper front site already pinned on.Not cheap, but clone parts rarely are..... |
