I am building a midlength with an A2 stock and it came with a rifle buffer I believe. Will that work or do I need a carbine buffer?

It will work fine with the rifle stock. If they did not sell you a rifle buffer with the A2 stock and all.. They messed up.

If you put a carbine buffer in that stock its going to work like welfare.. because a carbine buffer needs a carbine stock.

Now, the combo can work if you use the RRA entry tube, a bunch of spacers and extra long stock screw

(IMO midlengths are meant to not require heavy buffers and all that..... If it works with a regular buffer, use a regular buffer)

Spikes sells a spacer that you can put in the back of your rifle buffer tube to allow you to run carbine buffers in a rifle buffer tube.  Personally, unless I just had a surplus of carbine buffers laying around, I'd go with a rifle buffer.

Also, remember, the buffer system is completely independent of the gas system.  Rifle buffer tubes require a rifle buffer, A5 buffer tubes require an A5 buffer, carbine buffer tubes require a carbine buffer.  Some people seem to confuse this because the two most common gas system lengths are also rifle and carbine.  When you start talking about .308s and 9mms, there are more options, but I won't go into those to avoid confusion.

It should work fine with 5.56 but it might be a little sluggish with .223 ammo.
