Went to Cabela's this past weekend to pick up a new 1911, but ended up coming home with a new DPMS AR. They had ( what I felt was ) a good deal on them and I just couldn't pass it up. I ended up buying a Vortex red/ green dot sight for it also. I took it to the range the day after I got it to try and set the scope, but was having problems getting it zeroed. After about 30-40 rounds I gave up. As I was about to put the rifle in the case, something made me check the scope mount It self and I realized that the mount was a little loose and must have vibrated loose while shooting. The scope mount I'm using came with the  vortex strike fire scope.. Is this a cheap mount that you guys know of? Should I buy a better mount or do I put some thread locker on the mounting nut to keep it from backing off? Also, something else I was wondering about...  Is it very important to break a barrel in? I didn't notice until after I shot the gun and was reading the owners manual the barrel break-in instructions in the very back of my owners manual. I did not follow the directions... Did I mess up my barrel?

You did not mess up your barrel.

The mount you have should work fine.  1. Hand tighten 2. than give it a 1/4 turn with a coin after.

Good luck.

There are barrel break in instructions with a DPMS Oracle?

No you did not damage your barrel.

Welcome to AR15.com!

Congrats on the DPMS! You will enjoy AR ownership. Get some pmags, ammo and get out and shoot it allot!

I have a red only Vortex Strikefire on my Sig 522, works pretty good.

Have fun!

Yeah, they include one but I never paid attention to it. Just started shooting. Several thousand rounds later, still works fine.

I got a Cabelas sale flyer with that rifle in it   ––––  nice price

I wish rifles in that price range were available when i started shooting civilan AR's a few years back

Like someone else said,  get some P-Mags and enjoy

You didnt hurt the barrel on that ––––––       i also wouldn't hesitate to dab some blue loctite on my red dot mount,  but thats up to you ––- i put blue loctite on most things like that

I have an Oracle as well and I think they are pretty nice.  Mine shoots really well.  I have one complaint though and I am giving you a heads up.  The gas-block they use is made out of aluminum, at least that's what it feels like to me.  I have had mine heat up and turn loose on two different occasions.  I hate the gas block they use.  Take the two screws out of block one at a time and apply loctite to the threads.  If not you will spend a lot of ammo trying to figure out why you lost sight zero.  I know I did and it pissed me off.

Other than that one complaint I have never had a malfunction with about 1500 down the pipe so far.  Great little gun.

I also have this model, got it a year or so ago.  It is the single most inaccurate AR I've ever fired...it groups like a old mini-14!

HOWEVER!!  It has also been the single most reliable gun I've ever owned, which is why it has stuck around.  If I ever upgrade and the new gun proves to be accurate and just as reliable then I'll probably transplant my furniture and optic to it and put the oem stuff back on the DPMS, and decide from there what to do with it.

I really do love the rifle though.  I've had multiple people tell me they had grouping problems with their various model DPMS guns.

I also have had issues with the loose gas block.  Just put some thread lock on it as described above and it'll be fine.

I'm ahead of some of you already. I just recently ordered five Pmags from MidwayUSA for my Bushmaster A2 that I bought back in June. I just had to ask about the barrel because my bushmaster has a chrome lined barrel and I know this DPMS doesn't. I'm also new to optics and was unsure about the quality of the Vortex scope. I mean.. I know brands like aim point and stuff but I just really didn't want to spend that much. Something I do want to add before long though, is a front and rear flip up sight. Can any of you recommend anything for me?

have you look into primary arms red dot? its a (very) low cost alternative to the aim point and it has generally good reviews

I would make sure your mont is tight and when I zeroed my oracle I had to get it bore sigthed before it even hit paper.

I purchased the vortex strike fire scope from cabela's as you did.  I had intermittent power on issues and sent iy back.  Seemed like the mount was fine.  I would have put lock-tight thread locker on it, if I decided to keep it.

I know I'll catch some flack for this, but the UTG front and rear fixed sights have held up extremely well.

I'd also look into the Primary Arms Aimpoint clone. Mine has been flawless.

Loctite is temperature sensitive, not sure if it will hold. mark the bolt with a line across the bolt and gas block with something like a china marker, that way you will notice if it is working loose. You could probably stake it in place. Also there are bolt on gas blocks that supposedly stay on better. Arms and Vltor both look reliable but I have not used them.

Flip up sights:
I have a set of Midwest industries sights, they don't flip but fold up very easily.  They suit my needs
