Hey guys.  I've got a chance to get a Yankee Hill lower with FN upper, magpul furniture, sight mark red dot, magpul flip sight front and rear and quad rail for $900 out the door.

Or I could get a DPMS for $699 and add accessories from there.

I'm not real familiar with YH but assume pretty much anything FN is good.

What do you guys think is the better deal?

I guess I should have added M4 stock also. Thanks,

$900 desn't sound like a terrible deal provided you like the accessories being included.  Guess you could always sell the red dot and rails on the EE if you decide they're not your cup of tea.

I have an FN A4 20" upper and it's nice.  YHM makes good products in my experience too.  DPMS makes decent parts but some here have reported issues with their complete rifles.  Take it for what it's worth.

Have you seen the upper? I have had a few guys at gun shows selling "FN" uppers that were cheap, crappy forged, no names.

if it doesnt have an FN barrel, I'd doubt it is a legit FN. Doesnt mean the upper is shit, just that the seller may be dishonest/misinformed on what he's selling you.

What kind of rail?  There's a difference in price between a UTG and a LaRue.

I don't know anything for sure but here's my logic, it there is any...

I think the first rifle is too high.  A mutt is fine if you build the mutt yourself and know exactly what it has in it, and how it was put together.  If he put cheap sights and a cheap red-dot on it, I doubt very seriously the quad rail is quality either.

As far as the DPMS, it sounds like you may be looking at the Oracle, which is a basic no frills starter carbine.  I know, I have one myself.  The $699.00 price is about the average price out of a gunshop.  A lot of people will bash DPMS but most that do don't own them,....they "hear things".  And some things may very well be true.  I can only say that mine has been 100% since day one.  If I had to nit-pick my DPMS it would be the fit and finish is not as pretty as some out there.  All that aside I think if you look around you can find a better deal than the DPMS as well.  Don't get antsy like I did and plop down your money cause you got the bug.  Give this some thought and look around a little more.  I think you will find it will pay off in the end.  Good luck.

So basically this is not some great deal?...

I'm pretty much a complete Newb and have been going back and forth, back and forth (mainly b/c I get 500 different opinions) and this guy was saying that he thought Yankee Hill was up there with Rock River etc... I realize the red dot is an off brand etc...

Thanks for the help so far and any other input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Spikes upper($500) + lower of your choice(~$200)  = same $ as DPMS.

Naw, man.  It's about average if that.  The $699 is retail price on that gun.  And don't get me wrong, I am not knocking that gun either.  I have one and love it.  But keep in mind you will have to spend at least $100-200 on sights right off of the bat if it's the gun I think it is.  And more than likely it has that God-awful A2 pistol grip on it as well.  Lots of little stuff add up and before you know it your $699 gun turned into a $900-1000 gun.  Better off to spend a little more on the front end and get a few of those extras included.

Seriously? No one has recommended a PSA 16" Carbine with magpul furniture for $690 shipped and transferred as a better deal than either?

Midwest Industries 2 piece drop in rail for $125 of known quality and not some mystery potential POS, $66 for a DD or Troy fixed rear sight or $55 for a magpul BUIS.

$870 without optics or another $168 shipped for a primary arms micro dot on a cowitness QD mount.

The PSA sounds like a good deal and thanks for the heads up but I've actually got a NIB Benelli M2 Super 90 12 gauge I got for a really good deal. I need to trade with someone to make it work. I've got 850 in this gun retails for around 1195 around here. I'd only expect to get 1000-1050 though. I would sell it outright if you know a hunter that would want it.

Well, it's used, and built from parts. And like the old commercial about chicken nuggets said; "Parts is parts." If you had a Ferrari, would you put Cheng Shin tires on it? I am just always skeptical of a used AR, because they all clean up pretty well, but who knows just how hard they have been used, or just how high the round count really is? Nowadays, uppers are like biker chicks; they get passed around from bro to bro, and are shot out by the time they get to you. For $900, you can get something unique like a piston gun, or a really built up rifle from any 10 manufacturers. Spikes, Stag, CMMG, Bravo, RRA, list goes on. Main things are most will have chrome barrels. Not the end of the world to not have a chrome barrel........ you are not hunting in a jungle I will assume.
If you want an AR, and want to learn with it and shoot the shit out of it and not spend a crap load of cash?? 3 choices come to mind: Del Ton. Benefits- fully built complete rifle. Low price. FA and dust cover. DPMS: better M4 cuts, accurate barrel (Mine is pretty amazing for a budget banger.) Gas block front if you are interested in optics. BUT, no sights included. S&W M&P15 Sport. Complete rifle, Troy sights or Magpul flip up. Melonite coating is very good. Accuracy is very good. No FA, no dust cover. Not a problem.Very good machining finish, and 1/8 twist barrel handles all bullet weights well. Not a picky eater. I own the DPMS and the Sport; I'd spend on the sport again before the DPMS based on the finish of the machining in the magwell, and the lack of sights. For basically $600-650, the Sport is damn hard to beat. You can spend $650, and add magazines and ammo, or rails for doo-dads. Shooting more is more important than doo-dads IMO.

Rojo, thanks for the info...Sorry if I conveyed it was used, it is all new....

S & W really?  Your the 1st person that has recommended that on the net. I did have someone in the gun shop mention it...

The yankee hill guy also had a Del Ton but I didn't really pursue b/c I had never heard of it...

Man, it seems like 80% of the people say get a DPMS for the money and that they all perform pretty darn good.  It's just that people have "heard" they were P.O.S.'

Decisions, decisions...

Sell your other shit, buy the PSA, be happy.

If you pay any more than $500 for any DPMS, you're getting ripped hard.

Build one yourself exactly how you want it. You already show symptoms of Black Rifle Disease, why hold out any longer?
