I've been going over parts for my next build. As of now I'm looking at the choices for the end of the barrel.

Question... is the standard A2 flash suppressor inadequate in some way? Every manufacturer has their own latest and greatest, but in all honesty am I going to see any "major "difference
in the feel of the recoil or anything in the rifle to justify some of these prices. As it is now my AR's are pretty soft kickers compared to Mosin's or Mausers.

I don't mind spending money just don't like wasting it either.

Some of the more expensive muzzle devices I could upgrade the trigger with the price difference and the lower priced ones I could at least by a couple of extramags.

Nothing wrong with the A2.

Mine's had the same Smith muzzle brake on it for thirteen years now. It's not much louder than an A2 FH, and stabilizes the muzzle nicely. That said, were it not for the AWB being in effect at the time of purchase it'd probably have an A2 FH on it.

I guess the big question is... are you looking for a flash suppressor or a muzzle brake?

Dam ... that Smiths does on hell of a job on flash reduction, to the point of flash elimination!

I can't speak for brakes, but for flash hiders, unless you're going to war, they're superfluous....but all my ARs have them anyway. The A2 works fine for the money, for $20 more dollars you can get a YHM phantom that is an excellent design and will be significantly more effective than an A2, after that you're really not gaining anything. I do like the AAC Blackout and have two of them now; one because I wanted to try them; the other because I got a deal on a used one.

I use the standard A2, Vortex, AAC Blackout 51T and a PWS SM556.

The Blackout and the SM556 are I believe around $100 each while the Vortex is around $50.  I spent more on the SM556 and Blackout because they are going to be used as suppressor mounts one of these days.  The Vortex came with my Noveske SPR and I have no reason to change it out.  The more expensive muzzle devices do work slightly better but probably not worth the extra $100+ to most people if just being used on a range gun.

The birdcage works ok. even better with a 20" barrel, I like the YHM phantom works better IMO. Vortex is better yet.

I wouldn't say the superfluous.  It is not just other people they reduce the flash for.  It is you as well.  If it is a defensive weapon, there is the real possibility of firing indoors under low-light conditions.

My experience is similar to yours.  The A2 works fine.  I also think the Phantom does a better job.

After my first low-light carbine class a few years ago I began to install Vortex flash hiders on any carbine that was set up for low-light shooting. Since I order mine locally for around $40ea it isn't a big expense. They are helpful in low light shooting with certain ammo types, and superfluous with some other types of ammo. Hornady TAP for example appears to have a flash retardant powder, so a standard A2 works fine with that ammo in the dark. Lake City M193 on the other hand, is bright enough to wreck your night adapted vision. In fairness to Lake City, I don't know if their current milsurp ammo has flash retardant powder or not-I'm still shooting M193 from several years ago when it was $129/1000.

Here are a couple of training carbines wearing Vortex hiders:

fyi, those who hunt wild pigs at night down in Texas consider a flash hider to be mission essential. - CW
