Hey guys, so recently I've gotten really into guns and learned a lot about them at various sites over the past year. I bought my first AR this summer, a S&W M&Pmoe and I liked the rifle and shot it a bit, and put some accessories on that I felt I needed, a vert grip, light and a PA M4 red dot.
I soon realized however that the upper was not mil spec 1/7, and it had a 16in barrel, but a carbine gas system. I wanted this gun to be my do everything AR, and so I figured these parts should be upgraded, so I recently sold the upper to another beginner, and am now pondering what I should get to replace it. I will probably go with Spikes, PSA, or BCM for my upper, but don't really want this to turn into a discussion about which one of those is best as I already know, and am considering the cost/benefit relationship. So originally I thought I would go 16in barrel, mid length, 1/7 twist, CMV from Spikes. My question to you is, in an all around rifle, meaning range, home defense, and shtf should it ever happen, should I go with a government profile or lightweight barrel? I also am planning on building a second rifle then as well from PSA once they get light weight kits. This would be a 14.5 carbine lightweight that would be kiss and as light as possible with no optic or flashlight. This would be my backup rifle in case the first ever failed. Do I have a good plan here? Or should I switch rifles, meaning the 14.5 have all the goodies on it and the 16 be a kiss lightweight? Should the primary rifle have a gov profile or lw barrel? Anything else I should consider? Thanks in advance and thanks for reading. |
| All personal preference on the barrel profile. If you're going to have a back up then it should have everything your primary has or whatever your mission dictates. At a minimum I would have a sling and a light. Optics are a must for me, but I don't deem them necessary for all, so again, that's personal preference. Get what you think you'll need & outfit your gun. With some use you will soon realize what you need & what you don't. What works for others might not work for you & vice-versa. Mission will dictate most of this alon with personal preference. |

I want one to be kiss, and one to have a light, optic and foregrip so that I can handle whatever I need to, and need be can switch parts from one to the other. I guess my question more so is whether I should have a pencil barrel on the 14.5, the 16, or both, and which one should I outfit and whcih one should I leave kiss? |

first off. there's nothing wrong with a 16" carbine length barrel. barrel profile really is a user preference. what feels right to you? what is too heavy? a full profile 16" barrel feels great to me, but I have friends that prefer lightweight/pencil barrels. As long as its a quality barrel, the profile should have no effect on the way it shoots.
