If you find you need them, you can Dremel them in yourself or get someone like ADCO to do it.

A thread a while ago listed the part numbers for bushmaster c7 uppers with m4 feed ramps. Not a true a1 as it has the brass deflector and f/a but I see a few people with the c7 uppers in this thread. It is a part you have to call to order.

The A1 has a F/A.  True A1 uppers are available from NoDak.

Are the CAV arms lowers gtg?

I'm about to have pretty much the same setup, minus the acog, plus triangular guards (or maybe the new NDS ar10b style). Only issue most people have with the cav arms lower (myself included) is that the takedown pins are hard to get in/push out. Not that big of a deal for most applications... but something to keep in mind. I have to carry something with me to push the pin out, even needed a small hammer the first couple of times.

Also there doesn't actually seem to be absolute consensus on whether or not the bushmaster "a1" (c7) upper has m4 feedramps. It's possible that only Colt c7s had them. Of course there's always the dremel...

Those receivers with brass deflectors aren't A1 receivers. However, they're usually referred to as such due to the fixed carry handle and windage-only adjustable rear sight. An A1 receiver is defined as one with a fixed carry handle, windage-only adjustable rear sight, and forward assist.

They are called c7 uppers. The Canadians used them on their early version of the m16.

Hokie.

It is official..... after many years of drooling over your AR, I am going to copy it. (won't paint it right away, might do the BFPU look on it first)

And it shall be my primary rifle.

Thanks. I get a lot of comments on it. It's a great gun, the balance (due to the extra mag and the stock being full of stuff) is a little off.  Aside from that, it's definately one of my favs.

Okay, I'm not trying to be some hardon here.  I really really have always like this style of rifle.  It just has raw sex appeal.  And, I like old skool stuff.  One question though.  What kinda accuracy are you guys getting with the "pencils''?  Ammo used?  Range?  Only thing I am scared about.  Thanks guys, 9080

I have 3 pencil barrel AR's, two 20" and one 16". I have run a variety of weights through them. The two 20" 1-12 twist at 100yd shoot 55gr surplus to about 3-4inch. Black Hills blue box 55gr and 52gr at about 2-3inch. 62gr Radway SS109 looks like a shotgun pattern at 100yd. My 16" Bushmaster LW barrel in 1-7 twist at 100yds does pretty much the same with each load mentioned and for some reason does not like the Prvi 75gr match HP, 4-5inch at 100yd. I see no appreciable difference in accuracy between pencil barrels and gov profile or HBAR.

Just swapped my CMMG M4 profile barrel off of the 723 clone for a Colt 653 barrel - it's on an NDS lower and has the same Aimpoint 5000 optic, but in silver, and I'm not using the rear tube extension - otherwise looks pretty similar to yours, jcrowl.  Great configuration and great for plinking and with the .22lr kit.

It might look quite different soon, though - the better half likes the handling and I might be getting a pink furniture set from PK!

I finished redoing this one yesterday.  Previously, it had a 16" Bushmaster Superlight barrel.  I replaced it with one of the $150 DSA 14.5" CL barrels.  I pinned and welded an extended A2 flash hider on the end.  The result is a handy lil' carbine that balances and handles a lot better than it did before.  It's the dedicated beater/ truck / Air Force GUU/5P clone gun.  I have an identical upper in .22lr that I put together.
Out of a half a dozen ARs, 4 of them are A1s.

The thing I love about the A1 is the iron sights they are the stronges damage resistant sights on the AR/M16 series. Its funny when I had A2 fixed handles, carry handles and now a BUIS wich is not elevation adjustable I always zeroed as I did with A1 sights by just adjusting the front post for elevation even though on A2 sights there is an elevation adjustment.I kept it bottomed out and zeroed with the front post...to J I love the 723 clone and 653s are still my favorite carbines.Wow J that looks like a carbine the dleta guys used in somalia.."black hawk down"..real nice man

Ok, now I dont feel so weird about my idea for a KISS lightweight.  A1 upper, with teardrop F/A, pencil 1/7 midlength with MagPul handguards on a BCM lower with a Hogue grip and MagPul stock.  I also want a clone of that rifle with a flattop upper.  Should be damn fun little carbines.

Very cool. I want to do something similar with my cav lower LW carbine. Does the aimpoint co-witness with the sights on that mount?

I posted these up in the "Go-to" rifle thread but since it's a real M16A1 they belong here as well......

Here is a pic of my current, semi-approved, working gun:

Personally owned rifles are not authorized where I work.  We are issued 10-33 M16A1s.  Modifications such as A2 or night sights, buttstocks, and pistol grips are allowed as long as the Department Armorer and Range Master approve and an armorer installs the parts.  I went to a 3 day class with some Deputies from a local Sheriff's Office who had simply switched out the uppers on their 10-33 rifles and I brought this back to my Department.  Final approval is now up to the Chief of Police....

Specs:
M16A1 Lower Receiver with semi-only FCG
BCM 14.5 LW carbine upper w/pinned BC 1.5
Troy TRX rail
Surefire G2 w/KX4 head in VTAC mount
VTAC padded sling
Aimpoint T-1 in DD mount
Troy BUIS

Original configuration of my "go-to/work" rifle:

Specs:
M16A1
A2 rear apperture and front sight post installed
Magpu MOE handguards w/ IWC QD sling mount
Surefire VTAC L4 in VTAC mount
MOE illumination kit
VTAC sling

The BCM upper will go back on my 6920/SOPMOD lower for home use if personal owned uppers are denied.  I always adjust my collapsible stocks to about A1 length, so I have no plans on switching to and adjustable stock on this.

Stay Safe,
Rob

Not a military replica. Need to get an A1 lower and the correct buttstock for that. Mine doesn't have the trapdoor.
