It doesn't concern me in the least but it has me curious.  Yesterday I was cleaning one of my ARs after shooting and noticed that the bolt was magnetized as i was slipping it back into the Bolt Carrier.  I thought I vaguely remember another post about this but I couldn't find it via search. Anybody have a link to it?  I thought it was neat/interesting.

Sounds to me like they forgot to de-magnetize the bolt after mag particle inspection

Possibly, I haven't ever noticed it magnetic in the past though.  Only at this cleaning.

The only problem I can think of is the bolt will now collect metal shavings which could then cause the bolt to wear faster.

any machine shop could demag it in seconds. most shops have one, at least around here most do.

yeah get it demagnetized as it will wear down faster and collect more dirt.

this

there are a lot of companies that don't give a fuck about how to do MPI correctly...

It's the new and more reliable extractor for steel case ammo. No more stuck Wolf cases.

I kid, I kid.

I have never heard of that happening before.  It makes sense on how it happened though and why you should get it demagnetized.

Learn something new everyday around here.  Thanks.

Is that language really necessary?

Well somebody is obviously a little disgruntled..

i thought dropping something that was not naturally magnetic demagnitizes it? somethong about randomly arranges the molecules

Degauss that sucker! Let's see - a magnetic armature moving rapidly back and forth in the steel carrier as the gun fires, building up a static charge....might be enough to give somebody a jolt if you ask them to feel how warm the barrel is. LOL.

rearranges the alignment of the molecules, but really inorder to get it really demagnatized you would need to drop it TONS and have it hit a hard surface TONS. you could also just pound on it with a hammer... OR I wonder if shooting would demag it. impact forces, BUT movement of steel on steel could magnatize it due to alligning it. interesting MYTHBUSTERS!!!.

When the bolt hits 88.8 mph its going to skip time back into the dark ages.

well technically time travel is.....tech. but ya i get you could pay someone to do it faster and properly

Mine had magnatism when it was new. Is yours new? It goes away after you shoot it a couple hundred times. I would not worry about it.

Any hardware store should have a magnetizer/de-magnetizer for a few dollars . Used for screwdrivers & such . I would also de-magnetize it .

If you have a strong magnet, like you use for picking up nails in the yard, you can try dragging it closely by your bolt with a whipping or sweeping motion from the face to the stem or vice versa. You may have to try it both ways. Just about any welding or machine shop should be able to take care of it too.

I've never de-magged a bolt but I've de-magged everything up to a 36" pipe, turbine blades (aero and power generating), etc..

Remember when you're messing around with strong magnets to keep your credit cards and cell phone far away. I had to be escorted out of a nuke plant by security, because a magnetic base camera fell and I caught it squarely in the chest right on my badge and then I couldn't get out.

My Bushmasters M4 bolt is magnetized in the back behind the gas keys not on the bolt head .I do not see any problem with it

yes (sorry mom)

companies use MPI as a marketing gimmick, but completely disregard the TDP, and some companies that claim MPI don't even magnaflux their bolts properly...

Thanks for the comments. Like I said, this bolt hasn't always been magnetized. No clue why it is now. I'll have to pull the bolt out again and see if it still is. As I said in the beginning im not all concerned about it (though there were valid points about it catching particles). Just thought it was an interesting phenomenon.

Haha! that was great. Some could use it though, not a terrible idea
