locked her up tight as hell.  After i got the uper and lower seperated. buffer retainer  and spring fell out on table.  Any ideas  never had this happen before. This is my 3rd build dpms parts and  spikes lower.  I also noticed  the hole for the retainer is now egg shaped. i  hope lower isnt junk  retainer and spring still fit in hole in reciver but kina sloppy.

Is this on a carbine build? If so you probably just did not have the buffer tube screwed in all the way.

You don't actually even need it in there, it just makes it easier to open the two receivers.

Screw buffer tube in farther.  I did the same thing and took me a hour or so with the WTF look on my face before I realized i was a tard.  screw it in enough that the pin rests against the bottom of the tube but the top of the pin is still sticking up.

A while back I remember a batch of someones lowers that had the hole too far forward, that may be the problem.

Try screwing the tube in one more turn, if its too far you may need to file a little off the tube to make it fit so it retains the detent.

Mine was to far forward and actually broke the end off. I just left it out, you don't really need it.

Everybody that posted already nailed it - receiver extension wasn't screwed in far enough.

Had this same issue with my buddies bushmaster.  Buffer retainer popped out, so we screwed the buffer tube in 1 additional turn. But then, the upper receiver wouldnt close b/c it hit the buffer tube. One of my gunsmithing books noted that it is somewhat common and to just screw the buffer tube in far enough to hold the retainer, and then file (carefully) on the tube until it is flush with the lower.  So my for .02, just buy a buffer tube from a more reputable mfgr. (daniel defense) They dont cost that much more than say... utg

If the problem is with the buffer retainer hole being drilled off spec, then high quality buffer tube makes no difference.

I had to go one extra turn, and then file the end of the buffer a little.  No big deal ... actually helps me understand my AR a lot better when I have to work on it.

A2 stock  but you guys were right tube had backed off.  Im thinking about locktite on the tube so this doesn't happen again  what say the hive. Also maybe some sleve retainer to take up the slop in the retainer hole ? Just a couple of ideas.

Only go Blue Loc-Tite if you put some on, stay away from the Red stuff.

That is very odd the buffer tube on a A2 stock backed off, never had one do that before. Are you positive it was screwed in all the way & everything else was snug before hand?
