I am on the BCM site looking at their upper receiver groups, and I have what may possibly be a dumb question.  I see they have a BFH mid lenth receiver group with barrel, but then have the exact same thing but with "light weight".  From the pictures, they look exactly the same.  so what is the difference?  Is there a downside to having "light weight"?

The OD. on the light weight barrel is smaller, hence lighter. The only down side to the lightweight would be if you are gonna do massive mag dumps.

I thought that is what they are made for.

It'll be for range plinking.  Unless of course those damn zombies ever attack my house.  So lightweight would be ok I'd think.  Thanks for answering so quickly!  This will be my first AR.  So I'll probably do a 16" barrel light weight upper receiver group.

Mag dumps wont hurt the lightweight barrel, but the heat will affect the accuracy while the barrel is hot....

Which profile is the barrel for the first one? If it's standard (.750) then that's the difference when compared to the LW (.625).

IMHO it will not have nearly as much effect as you may fear.

I used to have a Colt 6520 (pencil barrel) and it shot as well as any other barrel, it just weighed less.

Now if you are gonna be doing incredible mag dumps and then shooting off bags on a bench for groups, may be it ain't for you.

I have a few BCM M4 uppers and they shoot fine.

In the chrome lined bore and chamber offerings BCM offers a cold hammer forged barrel (BFH) at a slightly more premium price
or the standard version at  more of a bargain price....

Government profile is light under the handguards @ .625 then heavier under the gas block @.750 out to the muzzle their light wt profile is @ .625 under the handguards..under the gas block and out to the muzzle....(they did have a light wt version that is light under the handguards then stepped up to .750 under the gas block and then back down to .625 from the gas block
out to the muzzle...not sure if they offer that one anymore)

I see the standard 14.5 middie light wt is in stock as is the 16" BFH (cold hammer forged) middie in light wt and standard....

If I had to order tonight....I would get the BFH 16" light wt. middie as I prefer 16" over 14.5 and light wt profile over the govt. profile
-not a thing wrong with the 14.5 light wt other than having to permanently weld on a muzzle device of some sort which may limit
your handguard and muzzle device choice in the future....

otherwise I would wait a few weeks...get on the email notification for the 16" standard light wt. middie to be back in stock.

IMO the light wt has a slightly better balance (neutral for me) than the govt profile....the 14.5 light wt. has an even better balance (for me) I just dont wanna hassle with the
permanent weld job or having to sbr the weapon.......
