I am confused about the function of the chrome in a BCG. Many BCGs are chrome lined in the interior. This is what provides the lack of resistance within the bolt? What about the outside of the assembly? Most of these are parkerized on the outside. Is this G2G or is another finished preferred. Before I get flames for another "repeat post" I searched for "bolt" and "bcg" using the seatch function and NOTHING came up.

I am thinking about the spikes BCG.

Is this the Chrome lined type BCG everyone suggests?

The chrome lining on the outside of the bolt and carrier really aid in the cleaning process and do reduce friction. You would thnk from looking at the upper and the carrier that the whole carrier makes contact with the inside of the upper reciever, but the only part of the carrier that makes contact are the 4 small lands on the carrier the rest of the bolt floats. The chrome lining on the outside is nice though. I have both types and the lined one is a lot easier to clean.

spikes bolts and BCG are great, only thing really better is something like nickel boron and thats subjective

The OP is talking about chrome lining on the interior of the carrier.

Ok.  So outside Chrome bolts help with cleaning, but adds no function?  As long as its chrome lined on the inside, its G2G then?

Nope he was asking a question about the lining on the inside ando outside both... Read it again.  As far as I know any mil spec BCG is chrome lined on the inside.   I'm sure a chrome lined outside will reduce friction some, but just think of the thousands of M16's in service they only have chrome on the inside of the carrier.

The real advantage to hard chrome is ease of cleaning, wear ressistence and corrosion resistence.  Most all gas keys are chrome lined for this reason.  Originally the M-16 had a chrome BCG.  Deemed unnecessary after changing to a chrome chamber and then chrome lined barrel MP tested parkerized BCG's also reduced mfg costs and are considered stronger by many users.  Most who can afford and use chrome BCG's really like them.  Have personally used original chrome Colt BCG's in period correct retro rifles and have also used Young mfg chrome BCG's in various flavors with great success in target rifles.  Currently I just use NOS Colt M-16 parkerized BCG's in almost all my builds.  If run wet a parkerized BCG cleans up pretty quick and I really can't justify to myself spending the extra coins in this area for chrome but if I didn't have a few Colt's I would buy the Young mfg more than likely.  I do recommend a new bolt on a new barrel and a factory matched barrel and bolt set really doesn't cost any more coins.  RRA and Spikes sell reasonably priced chrome BCG's. They seem alright but I've never tried them in any of my builds.

First i have heard of a match set being beneficial. I was thinking of a DD barrel and a Spikes bolt.  What problems could arise from this?  the only thing I can figure is Headspacing, but I hear that this should not be an issue if all parts are in spec. And from those manufacturers, the spec should be right.   Please elaborate.

You are correct it "could" cause headspace issues. And you are correct again when you said if they are both in spec then there shouldn't be any headspace issues, but here is where the problem could come from. If your barrel is at say the upper limits of the spec and your bolt is at the lowest limit of the spec then it may cause your gun to have too much headspaceing.  I would just go ahead and try to order the bolt/barrel combo. The bolts for the most part are the same. If it is MP inspected, shot peened and has the buffer on the extractor. It is G2G

The bolt/barrel combo will be nothing special.  They will most likely just grab whatever bolt is on top of the pile and headspace/test fire.

Probably correct here I was just saying it doesn't cost any more money usually if you do the math and chrome does.

Checking headspacing  would alleviate this issue though, I was intending of buying the Go No-Go guages anyway. Sounds pretty easy to do. Just slightly pricey.
