I cross posted this in the Troubleshooting section, but figured it may get more traffic here.

So, I was shooting yesterday when all of the sudden, my bolt wouldn't return to battery. My bolt is now stuck to a degree. It will move forward and backward, but only about an inch. I don't know if something is stuck in there binding things up or not. Anyone have any suggestions? This is my first AR. I put the lower together myself, but bought the complete upper. It is a Spikes Midlength Upper. I'm kind of worried that buying that cheap shit Tula ammo may have dicked me over here somehow. Anyways, here are some pictures. I can't see anything that shouldn't be there.

Have you taken your bolt and carrier completely out and inspected them thoroughly? I have the same upper and Spikes builds awesome stuff but I won't go near the Tula.

Take a rubber mallet to your forward assist, or do the field stuck bolt drill nd put your upper back on your lower, then try and slam the stock down while  push the charging handle out.

Make sure the chamber is clear before anything tho.

Negative. Never taken the bolt and carrier apart. I bought the tula to fuction check. The cheap price seemed like a good idea at the time.

Ok, I just did the rubber mallet to the forward assist. It worked and this came out along with my bolt. What is it?

That's part of your forward assist.

Looks like a piece of your charging handle? Have any other angles? Does anything from the inside ofmthe upper ormthe charging handle look like they're missing a piece?

Or that well at least the bolt and ch are out and the rifle is serviceable. The FA is a $20 part

Thank you for the offer. I appreciate it. I think I may try to figure it out on my own though. Never hurts to know how shit works on these things.

That's definitely his forward assist pawl. Did you happen to notice if any primers in the ammo were coming out? I had a primer come out one time and go into the cam pin hole in the carrier and create havoc for the bcg.

I have not found any evidence of a primer or anything else in there. Just that forward assist piece.

It somewhat makes sense, if that forward assist piece had broken while firing or from a bad Tula load, it was loose in the FA tube and had pressure on it from the FA spring causing play in the BCGs movement but not letting it come out or go all the way back in.

Are forward assists prone to breaking like this?

The rubber mallet may have free'd up the BCG but sheared the forward assist pin at the same time? No worries we will take care of it.

thats what im thinking. if it was stuck the force of the blows coulda sheared the pin in half and made that come loose

Yes sir they are. Another time I had one get caught in the lugs and binded up the whole rifle. I want to reiterate that popped primers are a bitch!

It very well could have. If that be the case though, what could have been binding up my bolt to the point where it would only move an inch? And thank you, I will do as you suggest and make a call in the morning. Top notch customer service! Thank you!
