Hello everyone, I have been doing some snooping around on the forum, checking different AR manufacturers. At first i was thinking about getting a BCM RECCE 16, everyone on the forum said they are excellent guns for the money and have excellent customer service. But then i started looking at LMT rifles lately and was wondering if anyone has any experiance with them? Are they a good company? Good guns? Relaible?

Also i wanted peoples opinions on Direct Gas vs Piston, the gentlemen at the gun store swore by piston AR's. He said that the Direct Gas guns arnt as relaible and if you get them dirty its a no go. But i was thinking about that and it doesnt make sense, if that was the case why has the military used DI for so long if when you get it dirty/wet it doesnt work? Is it worth the extra few hundred dollars for a piston AR?

Thank you all in advance

you answered your own question...

piston guns are more expensive and therefore take longer to sell, but usually have a higher profit margin...
if the rifle has been sitting for a while, chances are they need wall space.
if the gentlemen work on commission, your answer is obvious...

gun store employees sell what makes them the most money or has been taking up space the longest, they aren't trying to do you any favors. the only dealer that hasn't been like this was the pro-shop at blackwater. their prices were absurdly low, and there wasn't a taurus judge to be seen...

I have two LMTs; one piston and one DI.  They are great rifles.  I haven't had issues with them yet,

Thanks for the quick reply TheMechanic48, and excellent point Hellbound, To his credit though the LMT he was trying to sell me was DI they didnt have any Piston AR's in the shop, he just wanted to tell me that he thought the Piston system was better. so you would just go with the Direct Gas system?

Thank you for the info Shotdown, if i may, how many rounds do you have through each? Any noticible difference other then the obvious of heat etc... Does the Piston AR's weigh more?

I have both an LMT piston and a couple of complete BCMs.

Both are essentially equal in quality/performance, so while LMT offers better brand name recognition outside of hardcore gun nuts (FWIW) the BCM probably represents slightly better bang for the buck.

Of course if you looking at a piston, it's LMT.

I have a DI LMT MRP, I don't have a shit ton (few thousand rounds) run through it yet but it has been flawless so far! I keep it clean and if I don't clean it between range time I just spray some oil on the bolt and it is happy. I would suggest spending the extra cash the first time and get the gun you really want, being the way I am I will always want something better ha. I say get what you want the first time and if you can afford it get something different later!
LMT has all the good MILSPEC bullshit, and I hear their customer service is decent so that's a plus.
Brovo is bang for buck and if your just looking for a range plinker would be a great start, I am considering a BCM upper, either that or a 6.8SPC conversion for the MRP but I think I would rather have the second gun for now and for the money think I would go with second gun.

Is LMT any good?  ask our military  along with foreign militaries what they think of their products........not to mention the numerous LE depts and countless civilians who own gear........yea they are good to go.

BCM is also GTG  but if I had to pick one over the other I would take the LMT

I have two LMT piston rifles and they are my favorite ARs.  The piston setup in the LMT is one piece and very reliable and functional.   The good thing about the LMT rifles is that you can swap between DI and Piston by swapping the quick change barrels (if you have the MRP platform) and swapping out the bolt carriers.   Takes you 90 seconds.  So you can have the best of both worlds if you want to.

The recoil on the LMT piston is very tame and soft shooting.   Also you can get different calibers and barrel lengths to swap out whenever you want by using the MRP feature on the LMT.

BCMs are great guns, but I would say LMT is every bit as good.  I do put Bravo Company charging handles on all my rifles, including my LMTs.

Since your one the subject, How many rds have you run through your pistons? have you had any problems with them? I am considering a conversion, thanks.

I've had the DI one since 2008 and have over 7,000rds through it (rough estimate). I've used it for varmit hunting and competition. I picked up the Piston one last year and have about 2,000 rounds through that one.  The DI is a 16" barrel and my piston is a 12" barrel.  The piston does feel heavier than the DI.  However, I run them suppressed a lot and the piston one doesn't get as dirty as the DI.  It's much easier to clean too. Ever since I got the MRP CQB, my DI has sat in the safe.

ETA: While the MRP CBQ is very versitle (i.e. swapping barrels lengths and changing calibers) the conversions cost a lot.  I wanted a 6.8 so I built a seperate upper for it. I keep that upper on a pistol lower so that gives me another seperate rifle.

Have a LMT M4 and a BCM reece gun with mid length gas. Both 16"

I would not buy another carbine gas 16" gun like my LMT defender. Midlength for me from now on. This is the only reason IMO to look past an LMT.

The Daniel Defense carbines are a great value in a complete gun, mid length gas and a nice rail system, stock for around $1300 in my area.

BCM isn't just good for the money, they are good period.
But so is LMT.  You are comparing 2 excellent brands.

Get whichever one offers the configuration closest to what you want. If that doesn't narrow it down then get whichever is in stock. If that doesn't narrow it down then get whichever is cheaper. If that still doesn't narrow it down then just flip a damn coin

Havent any problems with my  Standard Defender 2000 M4 14.5

I also have a back up
LMT 14.5 M4 sitting on a Bushmaster Lower /VLTOR tele

LMT=GTG

Wouldnt have a problem useing a BCM M4 14.5 upper

BTW
If you want the long 16.1+A2 FH
I would go BCM Middy

LMT is GTG

I prefer DI simply due to cost, and the benefits of a piston system are minimal.  But if I were in the market for a piston gun it would be a LMT no doubt
